Good day to everyone in this forum. A few days ago I posted about wanting to get an ipad air 3 and people were commenting that I should just get the new ipad 9th generation. Now my question is the laminated display a huge downgrade compared to an ipad with a laminated one? I know that there is a gap on the glass and the screen itself but is it that noticeable? Also will you notice a 10.5 vs a 10.2 inch screen difference? I can only buy a used ipad and these 2 costs roughly the same in my country.

iPad History: I used to have an ipad air 2 in undergrad college and then had the 1st gen 12.9 inch ipad pro in med school (I have a history of a laminated screen ipad). Unfortunately I had to sell my ipad pro (I still miss it to this day) in 2019 in order to get a macbook since my old HP laptop just died. I just can't do everything or not as fast with just an ipad.

Uses: I won't be playing games on it since the Nintendo Switch and the PS4 is for that. The only use is for streaming videos and reading reference books (huge PDF files). Ghad I miss my old 12.9 just to read textbooks without having to zoom in but carrying it around the hospital isn't the best experience because of the size. I just need an ipad right now that can last for around 2 years and can satisfy my needs.

Other than the screen differences and a little bit faster performance, what other aspects of the ipad 9th gen is better? I know that selfie cam is way better for zoom calls but that's not a #1 priority. Is there other aspects of the older ipad air 3 that is better than the newer 9th gen?

As much as I would like to buy the newest and greatest, I have budget limitations because of how much med school even costs. Thanks you everone!

here you can see the difference between laminated and non laminated display.

unless you really need laminated display, then take the 9gen. It’s also supported for a longer time.

Honestly, coming from an ipad 6th gen to an ipad pro, the laminated display doesn’t really make any noticable difference to me at all. If that is your major concern, just go for the 9th gen is my advice.

I'm one who prefers non-laminated. It is rare to hear reports of anomalies with them, i.e., white spots, yellow bands, discoloration, etc. Laminated just seems too delicate and spongy when pressing, preferring the solid glass surface feel. Both look just as good to me.

9th gen is a better value imo. Feature packed to the core. It's a great value but they are hard to find prob because of the high demand

9th gen for sure. Better cpu, better graphics, same amount of ram, better selfie camera. Overall it will be the more future proof choice and without the risk associated with the air 3 screen and the white spot issues

The main benefit of the laminated display in my experience is much less glare when reading outside - is that a significant use-case for you?
