I have a MBP 15 inch right now but some of yall know that I have to keep that at school so my step mom said that she will buy me another computer for home use and I just can't decide wether to get a laptop or desktop. The computer that i'm on right now is a Dell and I use that at the desk at all times and its a laptop. I don't really use this one around the house because it over heats in like 20 mins if you leave it on your lap with no air to breathe but I believe I would if the MBP breathes well well on a couch or in your lap or something, right now I don't know cause I use it at school and thats for no more than an hour and half so if you could tell me the advantages of having a desktop at home vs a laptop at home, I would really appreciate it.

i'm confused. you already have a MBP and a dell laptop, and you're considering getting a THIRD computer just for home use?? why? the MBP is perfectly capable to act as your desktop. if anything, get an external monitor + kb and mouse and be done with it.
Buy two refurb 20" cinema monitors from Apple. Throw in a wireless keyboard and mouse. Viola you have a couple of desktop systems with monitors as large as the 20" iMac for less than that iMac would cost.
Unless you have some spectacular reason why you have to leave the laptop at school you could have a great system for both locations. With the leftover money you could upgrade the RAM and buy a large portable hard drive for extra storage.

although the fans dont vent through the bottom, my MBP gets pretty hot anyways. For home use, why not get a desktop- iMac should get a bump soon, or you could get yourself a Mac Pro...pick the options you want....you might be able to save on the HD and processors.

Well I leave my MBP in my locked vault thing at school because were not really allowed paper in pen but you can if you like that but it is a requirement for my school that all students have a laptop and it must be Apple after they had some real problems with Gateways. I am replacing my Dell laptop which right now never leaves the desk with another computer. Since the MBP you said doesn't vent very well i'm thinking that a iMac would be more than enough for me and I will still have my Dell laptop for the little projects around the house. I just have one question, when I order the iMac how do I get the wireless keyboard and mouse because from what I know you have to order that seperate and just have two of both but if there is another way tell me and which processor do you think I should get?

Get a desktop. Why would you need another laptop? There are less potential problems to deal with anyway when using a desktop.
Definitely the 20" iMac, hold off for core 2 if you can (a month tops I think), 1-2GB ram obviously. I thought they used to offer the wireless K/M combo as an option but I guess thats gone now since the wireless mighty mouse came out. But yeah, the 20" and wait a month if you can for the better chips
I can wait a couple of months there is no hush. My school is a private school so my dad pays a crap load of money thats why we have to have those cause if you can pay the tution you can afford a new mac just for school. Its going to be hard going from having a laptop to a desktop but I think its worth it. What kind of new stuff is going to be on the 20" iMac?
