They don't run the same OS now do they????? Let's wait for a couple of point releases of Lion and then such benchmarks will have meaning.

If they reviews were smart they should have ran the same OS. Not sure if they did though.

But it's not a fair comparison since the startup time of the 2010 model was tested with Snow Leopard rather than with Lion. Or I'm I wrong?

For them to already have a MBA they easily had Lion so they should have done the test with Lion on the old MBA.

And forgetting the 2011 MBA cpu + ssd combination is nearly twice as fast as the old mba.

I say those figures are negligible considering the OS is different. How many times will you power down anyway.

30 days standby with near instant resume.

I think these days, the faster the SSD the more pleasurable experience. Unless you are encoding and decoding or doing heavy graphics.

I think it matters not whether one eeks out the other by a little here or there. The real point is that those who waited a year for Sandy Bridge instead of buying the "outdated" C2D gained nothing for their wait.

Nothing, of course, unless they were holding out for Intel integrated graphics.

It's quite clear that they have been sent a demo unit. This happens a lot with product released so PR goes out from multiple sources on the day of release for max effect.

This review would have been queued up waiting for the release.

The only doubts i have about its authenticity is the lack of other reviews from the big guys but this is laptopmag.com. They are pretty big.

They are getting a significantly faster processor. Not everyone runs games, and those who don't are getting 1) a backlit keyboard, 2) Thunderbolt, 3) larger SSD option on the 11", and 4) more processing power.

We knew the IGP was the tradeoff. Blame Intel, not Apple, since there is no room for a discrete GPU and Intel won't license other IGPs. Maybe someone will make an external GPU for the Thunderbolt port. Rather than complain about the HD 3000, petition AMD or NVIDIA to make an external GPU.

Actually, the WOW test surprised me. It seems the HD 3000 may be OK for light gaming. The 320m wasn't exactly a speed demon, though paired to the i7 (if Intel allowed it), it would be better.

The upgrade makes the Air the "Ultrabook" to beat right now.

They do get models in advance but are under NDA, then they can release their reviews as soon as apple announces them :)

Speaking about the boot up time, I'm on 10.6.5 on my 2010 MBA, not yet perform an update. I'm consistently getting 11~13 secs starting from pressing the button (press button and stop watch together).

well the new OS takes more resources than Snow Leopard... still it's only a 2 second increase... doesn't make much of a difference.

yup, just like a few iPad developers got theirs in advance, and how Walt Mossberg always seems to have his iGadgets a few days prior.

I'd love to know where Apple gets their "up to 2x or 2.5x faster". Frankly I think they are complete and utter marketing BS. I'll be impressed if the new Xbench numbers are even 20% faster. I don't doubt the 2011s will be faster in some ways but it makes me angry when manufacturers make statements that may be true on some level but completely misrepresent the overall truth.

My 2010 1.6ghz MBA Xbenches at about 120 stock. It xbenches at about 140 with an OWC SSD. Will look forward to seeing 2011 benchmarks and user experiences to see what a more real world improvement is.

Yeah its still only a couple seconds, but still laptops should get better not worse, even if it is only 2 seconds. It makes no difference to me but I do see the point others are making, but I would like to see a video of it with both running Lion.
