Laptops Optical Out

I am looking into making one of these: http://www.macmod.com/content/view/210/2/
Now I am starting off by figuring out how I will get surround sound out of the laptop. One option would be to get a higher end laptop and just use the optical out. The other option is to get a FireWave. Is there any other option? What laptops support optical out?

I will keep you posted on how it turns out. Off to ebay I go.

The guy from the linked site just streamed his music to an Airport Express, which supports optical out.

That could be an option but it would be cheaper just to get a Firewave, as the surround system will be right next to it anyway......

haha I didn't see the link at first and thought you wanted to get optical sound to come out of your laptop not to actually rip the laptop apart

I will take it apart nicely. Yeah making a MBP into this would be over kill. But no i was not going to take the part needed out of the MBP and put it into some ibook.....

Yeah the fact that the MB doesn't support 5.1 kinda sucks, that's the reason why I'm selling my z5500.

The MacBook does support 5.1 through its combo digital/analog port.

Yes it does it just needs a decoder. Thats what all Optical out ports will need......
