Hi guys,
I have recently brought the 27" quad core iMac (the top model) and had it since Tuesday. Just now really the computer was showing the screensaver and I pressed esc to wake it up and it made this huge snap/bang. Scaried the crap out of me! Straight away I had the feeling it was to do with the sound so when I tried turning it up and playing iTunes music and no sound.
I panicked and put it to sleep, I re-woke it and the sound came back just fine.
I thought it was just a one off and so continued using the iMac and listening to the music but then it did again.
I have now switched it off as i'm now worried the sound has blown.

Anyone got any ideas what's going on? Also need to say I can't just get it fixed from apple as I'm gonna be heading back to Uni pretty soon.

Thanks!

T<14days = return;
T>14days = Applecare (Negotiate return??);

i have applecare but like i said i dont want to just send it back, this is a new imac it shouldn't be playing up. I was just wondering if this happens from time to time, or if its a one off type of thing?

im currently using it now and it seems to be fine with music playing okay but im worried it may do it again

Oh man,that's not good,your speakers might have blown,I would take it to a Apple store ASAP,it's not supposed to do that,and it wouldn't be your fault as it's not supposed to do that. :) It doesn't matter if you were listening to music and the screen saver came on.

No....this shouldn't happen from time to time.

If you're really worried, take it back. That's what warranty is for. Just because it's a new machine doesn't mean it will be perfect.

Incidentally, if you have got speakers plugged in, from time to time it will make a popping noise (at least it does on mine when using optical out. Time to time has been a month or so.

Thanks for the reply guys, today it's now just not turning on at all, think those bangs where alot more serious then I thought. Phoned apple and it's been sorted. The nice chap on the phone said I would get a replacement which is great. I'm really pleased that they are sending out a new before the old one is being picked up, meaning it takes less time.

Let's just hope this new one works okay :)

The last time I had that loud bang (on an '06 iMac) it was the internal DC board self destructing, sounds like yours was giving up the ghost too, the sound could have been one of the capacitors blowing.
