Hello!

I may need to turn my living room into a home office during the day…

The current 4K TV is well placed for my desk, however it is used for my family to watch movies using Apple TV presently.

I am wondering… is there a monitor which would serve both duties well??

TV: The wall space for my tv is 39” wide.

Mac Mini: I currently use a dual monitor setup with 27” apple cinema displays hooked up to my m4 mac mini. My work is conducive to dual monitors that are large.

QUESTION:

Is there a monitor that can serve both duties well?

A 4K TV doesn’t seem to work well as a work monitor. Is there a computer monitor measuring 39” wide that would also serve as a TV?

Thank you!
Richard

My mini situation is in the same boat, Richard!
I won't get a smart TV as my neighbor, mom and others need to unplugged their's
(well I hafta) when they go all windows98 and cease to work.
I only use a benQ 24_2K for my room with the MacBook Air,
and an old 2012 Samsung 43" 1080dpi downstairs that displays the mini.

hopefully someone in here has a solution!

I believe that would be called a...TV.

Why not? Lots of people use TVs as monitors. What exactly is it that isn't working well for you?

When it comes to Macs, you can't just go by size or resolution alone. You need to take both of them (along with viewing distance) into consideration. For example a 32" 4K display might look crappy, but a 24" 4K display will look great.

Generally speaking:
  • 24" should be 4K (or 1080p)
  • 27" should be 5K (or 1440p)
  • 32" should be 6K (or 1692p)
  • Anything bigger, we're pretty much limited to 4K or 8K even though it may not be "ideal"
This blog explains it a bit more.

Why doesn't a TV work well as a monitor?
I've never had any problems.
Get one that has a very low latency- good game mode- and it will work very well.
On the other hand, monitors make terrible TVs not least because in my experience they never come with speakers.
