I use Time Machine on my 3 Tb Time Capsule which I bought in March 2014, used to back up the three MacBooks/MacAirs we use in my family. The MacBooks all are running MacOS 10.15.5 Catalina.

Everything has been running smoothly. Backups are being made flawlessly, right on schedule.

Until last night, when out of the blue I get this message:

The backup disk is not in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format, which is required.
Huh?!? Where did that come from? I've poked around a bit, best I can, and see nothing out of order. As far as I remember, nothing out of the ordinary happened yesterday.

Please advise!

PS—I've been using Macintosh computers since 1987. But I'm not particularly tech-savvy. LOL.

Could be the hard drive is failing.

I personally have had back luck with 3TB hard drives.

No sure if compatible but I would replace it with a 4TB WD blue.

Second that this suggests that the Time Capsule disk is failing. Time Machine use is rough on the disks. I rotate through two TM disks running concurrently - using standard desktop 3.5inch disks in cheap USB docking stations. Every time I have disk issue, I replace the disk and increase order number. After ~15 years of doing this I am on TimeMachine8 and TimeMachine10. TimeMachine9 disk started recently overheat when backup to. It can be red, just cannot run too long and stops responding. With this experience, my best guess is, that average desktop disk used for TimeMachine has lasted me about 3-4 years. Yours is 6 years old. Time for new and larger disk.
