Latch stuck

Hi, I've had a 15" mbp about a week now and it's been working great except for the fact that the lid has stopped closing already. I've narrowed it down to the release button (with the sleep light) being jammed in slightly.

At least I think it's this. I remember it being flush with the front before but now it's in several mm and won't push in very much further when I try. It must have caught when I pushed it in once and never sprung back out correctly.

As far as problems go, it's not the worst but it's causing a lot of trouble. I don't need to spell out the dangers of not being able to close the lid. There's no apple store in the country here and I don't fancy losing it for a month just to fix something I feel is a very very simple job with no replacement parts needed.

I'm not prepared to open my case to fix it. I've tried wiggling it around and prodding it in places, hoping it'll snap back out but I've had no luck. I think if a spring was gone, it would feel looser than it does.

Anybody had this happen and did they find a way of fixing it themselves?

There are a few people mentioning this problem. Safest bet is to call apple, or take it to an apple store.

My only problem with that is that I doubt Apple are gonna tell me to wiggle about the latch or try and pop it out myself. So I was wondering if anybody had some success trying something that Apple wouldn't be in a hurry to advise their customers to try.

There's no Apple store in Ireland I'm afraid. Just resellers. Otherwise I'd have been straight into them already. I'm really just trying to find a solution that'll avoid me having to post it back to Shanghai where they'll fix it in 2 minutes flat by wiggling the latch and then have to wait a further 2 weeks to see it again.

Yep, this must be a new thing with the C2D batch.

Really annoying. I'm also in Ireland, but bought it on the US Mac site. I returned it to Mactivate to do a warranty repair. No idea how long it'll take to get back. They say turnaround is 8-10 working days (two bleedin' weeks).

But Apple Europe operates from Ireland, right? (Cork if i'm right). Maybe you can drive over there?

Wait, so some places in Dublin can repair stuff under the Apple warranty rather than Apple insisting it be posted to them? That would be incredibly useful if it's true.

It does, yep. Usually any Apple orders I've made have come Cork. But since the mbp have been in huge demand, my order came from Shanghai like everyone elses. Because of this, I figured repairs may have to go this route aswell until parts are more evenly distributed about their worldwide centres.

I doubt that. Although manufacturing is moving to China, a lot of repair work for computers is done locally. Well, by locally, I mean without leaving the continent. There are quite a few companies that handle that sort of thing located around big airports in the US.

Yeah, http://www.mactivate.ie - they do warranty repairs.
