I just acquired the iMac referenced in the title, and my friend didn't want to keep messing with fixing it. It only boots up once in a while and he says the internal display is non-functional, but external displays do work. It's a beautiful machine and I'd like to get it back up and running. The outer glass does need to be replaced. Not sure if he broke it or someone else did.

I also have no clue what he did or didn't try to fix in it. I might get a response today or next week depending on his mood.

Any ideas on what I can try and or buy for it? I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Edit: He text me back and said he didn't do anything to it. So first order of business is to replace the backup battery.

My advice:
Don't spend much (any?) money on it.

At ten years old, probably not worth fixing any more.

I don't plan on spending too much on it. I'm hoping the internal LCD isn't bad though. I definitely do want to try to get it running though.

Edit: Also, my 2008 Mac Pro was sure worth the $500 I spent on it, so I do want to get this working.

Ok. So to give an update. Nothing on the internal display. External works fine. Sound works fine. Hard drive fan is on full blast. I suppose he forgot to hook up the hard drive temp sensor because it says 9ºC

You can run the os on an ssd externally if you can get it cloned. But I wouldn't spend much on it.

Thanks. There is a 250GB hard drive in there. But it's blank. I do want to fix the outer glass and make the display work again. I have El Capitan on an external drive thankfully.

To give an update. The display connector on the back of the logic board was broken. So I found a deal for a logic board on eBay and swapped my processor, heat sink and GPU on it, put it back in, and it started right up. I did that in the middle of the night, so that was how my New Years was spent.
