Surely I cannot be the only one here that has had their ATI Radeon 4850 fail in their late 2009 iMac. This is unacceptable as the computer is only 4 and half years old. I've monitored the temps in my iMac since new and after being told numerous times that the internal temps are within acceptable range by Apple and other users I have come to the conclusion that Apples obsession with creating a silent all in one computer has compromised the longevity of the internal components. The temps at idle exceeding 60 is essentially slowly roasting the internal parts leading to premature failure. Watching Netflix movies in HD had the temps exceeding 70 which is outside the operating range according to ATI. I have since downloaded macsfancontrol and have adjusted the temperature parameters for the fans to engage at lower temps with lower maximum temps to reach to prevent future problems. I understand apple has a long obsession with creating thin, compact, quiet all in one design but this should not come at the cost of reducing the life span of the computers components. I would rather hear my fans kicking in then having my GPU fail.
This is my theory and explains why Apple has been having so many issues with hard disk and GPU failures in their MacBooks and iMacs while other computer manufactures have not had so many widespread issues with ATI and Seagates components failing.
