Hey guys,
I'm looking to replace a very old PC machine that is currently serving as a file server/DLNA media server (via Universal Media Server software on Win7). The current one can't handle smooth playback when transcoding 720P (choppy) or 1080P (brutal and unwatchable) MKV files, especially over the Wifi network at my house. It has some technical issues which is the catalyst for all this, but I figure I'll upgrade since I'm replacing it anyways.
I'm wondering if anyone would have insight on this - would a 2.26GHz Mac Mini be able to handle transcoding (one or MAYBE two files at a time only), over Ethernet for the most part, of those 1080P files? They're not HUGE, typically 3GB-5GB for a 2hour or 2.5hour movie (although if I could rip BluRays into 25-30GB files and stream those, that would be even better)? I'm looking at a Late 2009 model, conventional HDD internally, media mostly on an external USB3 (conventional) drive, and probably 2GB-4GB RAM along with the integrated Nvidia 9400M GPU. There are some great deals locally for used machines (private sale) so that's why I'm looking at this machine. I'm also weighing the option of a new lowest-end 2014 Mac Mini, or one of those Intel NUC boxes with an Intel i3 or i5, but this is a way cheaper option if it's adequate.
Thanks in advance!
