I got a late 2010 27" iMac and since about a few months ago the computer has been randomly turning off on me and I can't tell if its the entire computer itself turning completely off or just the monitor. Here's what happens at times the screen will just turn off and after maybe 20 minutes to an hour or so I would tap the mouse or a key on the keyboard to turn it back on. When doing this the computer sometimes turns right back on and things are just as if they were before it turned off which leads me to wonder if its the display going out or that's bad. Then there are times when I expierence the same issue only a tap of the mice or tap of a key on the keyboard doesn't bring it back to life and I'm forced to turn it back on using the power button.
Now this being said I said ok maybe its time for a fresh reinstall of Snow Leopard to remedy the issue, so I slipped that disc in and powered down the machine so I could then power it back up from the disc. Now as OSX began to install it was after its completion when the computer would restart and ask me to enter account info along with a name and login for the computer that it would begin to do what I described again where it would just randomly shut off. Sometimes you can get it to turn back on and still be at the same screen where you last left off but only for a few seconds then it turns off again (the display that is).
Would any of you have any idea if its the display that's no longer good or if it could be maybe the hard drive going out on me? I'm really at lost as to what exactly is causing the issue especially given that it persisted even after a clean install of OSX. I also don't have AppleCare on it nor an AppleStore anywhere near me and to ship it directly to Apple for fixing (if it is possible) would cost me an arm and a leg. I'm much inclined of taking the computer apart to replace the LCD and Hard drive myself if that is what could be causing the issues.
Any ideas folks of what could be causing this?
