Please see attached pic.

1) The symptoms started out as a very small black "blob" - over the months it increased in size up to the point you see in the attached photo. It seems pretty obvious to me that I have to change the screen, yet I just want to make sure it's not a different problem.

2) Why is this black part "spreading" over the months? I didn't apply any pressure, the mac just stays closed in a storage room. I'd love to understand what happened.

3) I also have to exchange the keyboard - some of the buttons don't work at all anymore.

Given the amount of spare parts, would it be more reasonable to strip this mac and sell the parts? I am in China, I can get a display for around $60, but the keyboard might be more expensive.

The rounded edges of the problem suggest something like a fluid spreading or a fungus eating the display internals - in case you’re wondering I am pretty certain that it is NOT an electronic failure of the lower case electronics. A failure of the driving electronics or the interconnect system would manifest as a rectangular or linear affected area, because the display is driven as rows of pixels. But yeah, that’s a weird one.

Thanks a lot, I really wanted to exclude electronics failure before getting into the almost impossible task of replacing the display myself. I've found a couple of other similar cases like mine.

In most cases an object (for example earphones) where in between the screen and the keyboard when the mac was closed, leading to a small spot. However it seems that once the screen is broken it just "spreads" due to the chemicals sandwiched in-between the glass layers.

I ordered a new screen, I'll report back if it solved my problem

Cheers
