Been thinking of upgrading the hdd on my iMac internally to ssd and have been reading online about the thermal sensor for the fan speed and temp sensor, has anyone done it to a 2012 one and not touched the sensor or do you have to buy the thermal sensor kit I've seen online?

Alternative route:
Fastest, easiest, cheapest, and fewest potential problems is to buy an EXTERNAL USB3 SSD, plug it in, and set it up to be "an external booter".

You'll see speeds that are 85%+/- of an internally-installed SATA drive, with NONE of the problems you could run into trying to install it internally.

You should see read speeds about 430mbps and writes from 300-350mbps or so (depending on the drive brand and size).

The external SSD will probably outlive the iMac, you can just "take it with you" to any new Mac later on.
