Sigh... 32GB of memory and still we get pauses...

After a week or so of running, sleep at night, work all day, sleep at night... I get inundated with the spinning beach ball... Activity monitor swears that CPU is about 5-10% at the time... Memory is anywhere between 12-20GB used. So truckloads free... No swapping, no paging... Disk IO nearly nothing... Yet the damn spinning beachball fairy visits time & time again...

Usually it kicks in when you try to change between Safari windows. And especially when Activity monitor tries to update... It's like there's a leak there somewhere or a list just gets appended to and never cleaned (And Activity monitor is trying to traverse it). Although Activity Monitor swears that memory usage for Safari (Although what I'd consider to be high) isn't excessive (In fact the largest memory user is the mysterious 'kernel task' PID 0 - currently 3.31GB real memory usage on my MBP.. WTF!).

Anyone else get this? or does everyone treat the mac like windoze now and **** the damn thing down every night?

I'm current for updates, running 10.11.5 and it affects both my Mac Pro (Late 2013) 32GB RAM and 256GB SSD and MacBook Pro (Late 2013, 16GB memory, 512GB SSD). The MacPro is worse...

I seem to remember one user fixed a similar issue by changing History to 30 days from One year.

Options to check:
Start with a clean Safari folder...
Quit Safari
Rename the Safari folder in your User's Library to SafariXXX
Turn off iCloud sync to Safari in System Preferences > iCloud
Open Safari
You can revert to your previous by removing the xxxs after deleting the newly created Safari folder.

Option 2)
Get the new Safari Technology Preview. It will sync to your current data but it won't have the history settings from Safari.

I am impressed with the speed of STP. Updates come via App Store.
