I've had a search around the forums and can't see any definitive answers so I thought I'd post a question.

I'm desperate so any help would be appreciated!!

I have a late 2014 Retina 5k, i5 3.5Ghz, Radeon R9 graphics card and updated to 24GB internal memory.

The issue I'm facing is with editing in FCPX, and also live streaming using a Canon 77D via an El Gato cam link, into OBS, the computer just can't handle the workload.
In editing the mac just gets hung up, use of LUTs is laughable, and often ends up with FCPX simply not responding. In live streaming my fps should be 24fps but OBS is maxing out around 14 - 15fps and making the whole experience a nightmare. When editing, to try and keep things light on the machine, I try to edit from an external Samsung T5 SSD.

The obvious answer would be to get rid of my current machine and purchase a higher spec'd i7, but coming up with the 1500 -1800 pounds for a second hand machine is just not possible currently.

This got me wondering if the use of an eGPU would be possible and helpful for the money invested. I believe my machine has a thunderbolt 2 which can cause a bottleneck, but I'm having a hard time finding a definitive answer online.

I'm truly desperate as I'm a disabled chap trying to scrape through a living via working online with editing and streaming, and it's working slowly, but now the lack of performance seems to be halting any progress and I really need to find a fix.

Is the truly definitive answer 'get another machine'? Even if this is the case, I'm terrified I'm going to be spending funds I don't have on something that doesn't work either.

Advice truly appreciated

Hope you can get an answer.. For me, just check your activity monitor. Remove non essential startup and stop the freakin icloud thing which keep sync and read the hard drive. .

Some info would help other to try to answer ?

1 . 720p ,1080,1080p,2160p ?

2. Have you try other software like imovie,da vinci resolve.

I guess it would be worth while investigating if you can have the internal HDD upgraded to SSD, assuming you are currently running an internal HDD instead of SSD? This would eliminate the possible TB bottleneck?

I'm editing in 1080p

I use FCPX as it's the most powerful for my needs, plus over the years I have plugins etc that work with FCPX

I just downloaded and ran Clean My Mac 3 to get rid of any unwanted stuff going on as it seemed to have good reviews, and now I appear to have 14GB of memory free of the installed 24GB

I've got 378GB free of the 1.11TB hard drive as well, with the majority of that being taken up by 'System'

I have the 1.11TB Hdd, but for editing, my library files and working files are all on a Samsung T5 SSD and use proxy footage
