I just couldn't find an answer to this question.

What is the latest MacOS I can install on my Mac Pro Quad Core A1186 (EMC: 2113)?

I've seen a lot of guides, but somehow they all talk about Mac's from 2008 and newer. What does my Mac Pro lack compared to a Mac from 2008 and newer?

I'm currently trying to install Monterey through OCLP on a SSD but during the creation of the installer, I couldn't select Mac Pro 1.1, the minimum as Mac Pro 3,1.

I don't care how slow this thing is going to be, I just want to experiment with Catalina/Big Sur/Monterey. Theoretically, they could run on it, I remember that this Mac Pro was advertised as a 64-bit workstation.

Hacked El Capitan is the end of the line for a Mac Pro 1,1

10.7.5 is the last officially supported OS.
Well I'm now just trying to install Lion on a bootable USB so I can just browse a bit, but I can't open the .dmg file on my M1 MBP. Is there a way to install Lion with my M1 MBP?

Maybe this helps

The problem lays in the fact that I can't have a ''.app'' version of OS X 10.7 on my M1 Mac. After opening the .dmg file of the OS X, I can't go further than this:

Is there any other way?

Anyone with a solution on how to reinstall MacOS without needing a second drive? I tried to enter recovery mode but after selecting 'EFI Boot' (the only partition that shows up), I get the white screen of death. My Mac Pro is connected to wired internet.

I already did a NVRAM and SMC reset.

The package contains the Install Mac OS X Lion.app you need to create a bootable USB installer. If macOS on your M1 Mac doesn't let you open the package for some reason, use Pacifist to open it and extract the .app.

If the built-in createinstallmedia command then fails to create a bootable USB installer on the M1 Mac, you can try simply restoring the InstallESD.dmg disk image buried within the .app's Contents/SharedSupport directory (right-click and "Show Package Contents" to get there) to the USB drive using Disk Utility, Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper!. (Lion is the first and only version where this works.)

I tried to enter recovery mode but after selecting 'EFI Boot' (the only partition that shows up), I get the white screen of death. My Mac Pro is connected to wired internet.
A 2006/2007 Mac Pro doesn't do Internet Recovery. This is only possible on 2010 and newer Macs.

Unfortunately, “hacked” El Capitan is the hard limit for a Mac Pro 1,1 or 2,1 because its CPUs don't have SSE4.1 instructions. Sierra and later versions require those. There is no way around that.

Well I've tried booting through a usb with OSX 10.7.5 Lion. I managed to create the USB following the process of this video through a Windows laptop and TransMac:

My Mac Pro does not recognize the bootable USB when I'm pressing the alt-key. The only partition I can see is the EFI Boot from my SSD, but when I click on that, I get a white screen.

I connected the USB to my M1 Mac, and it could detect Lion, but again, it could not go past the .pkg file. Still, this confirms that there is an installation of Lion on that USB.

I read that some Mac's can't boot through USB but only through their optical drive, could this be the reason? If so, how to eject that optical drive without having a MacOS on it.

If you’ve simply copied the.pkg file to the USB drive, it’s not going to work. You need to do it using one the methods I mentioned. Can you post a screenshot of the USB drive‘s contents as seen on the M1?

(I didn’t watch the video because I’m on my phone which is why I’m asking.)

All Intel Macs can boot from USB, so you’re covered.

This is on the USB. I created it with the method provided in the video in my previous post. TransMac is a piece of software that extracts the dmg file to let Windows users make bootable usb’s.

I tried to extract it using Pacifist for the third time and it fortunately worked.

Would could I do next. I'm new to this, it's my first time doing a clean install on a Mac OS X without already an OS installed on it.

This is on the USB.
Please do the following: launch "Terminal" (it's to the left of Pacifist in your Dock) and enter
ls -al "/Volumes/Install Mac OS X"
Post the output of that command here. This helps checking if the Lion installer image has been successfully copied to the USB drive.

Thanks. This reveals that the USB drive only contains the InstallMacOSX.pkg package. That's not going to work.

Try the following:
  1. Open this package in Pacifist.
  2. Extract the following file (just this one!) from the package: Install Mac OS X Lion.app/Contents/SharedSupport/InstallESD.dmg. The file should be very large (4 GB or so).
  3. Reformat the USB drive (so that it's empty) and then use Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! on a Mac to properly restore that InstallESD.dmg file to the USB drive. Properly restoring means doing an exact block-by-block copy. If these tools don't accept the image file itself as a source, double-click it and use the "Mac OS X InstallESD" volume that shows up now as source.
  4. If this succeeds, you should now have a bootable Mac OS X Lion USB installer to use on the Mac Pro.

I can't extract it.

I can't find the .dmg file either. It has OSInstall.mpkg in that folder. It does not do anything when I extract that file.

What’s the size of the InstallMacOSX.pkg file in Finder? According to Terminal it’s about 4.7 GB (which sounds right) but Pacifist says it’s less than 240 MB. Something doesn’t add up.

I found the file in 'package resources'. I extracted it to a folder, the .dmg is up there but I got an error that it couldn't be fully extracted.

When I want to extract it again I get the following message: ''The operation couldn't be completed. No such file or directory''

This is what I get when selecting the installesd.dmg file in Carbon Copy Cleaner.

This is what I get when using using the second method by double-clicking.

Sounds right. Can you mount the image in Finder?
I don't really know what you mean by mounting the image in Finder.
Screenshot 2022-04-17 at 22.02.59.png

I can open it like in the picture above, but whenever I try CCC to select it as a source, it still gives me the error with the fact that there is another volume with the same unique identifier.

That’s just what I meant by mounting. :)
Can you try restoring the “Mac OS X Install ESD” volume to the USB drive using SuperDuper!, in case CCC doesn’t like it for some reason?

I tried some things with SuperDuper! before starting this topic and I just bricked the whole program. It crashes every time I open it, even when giving it a clean install. :p

I'm creating a byte-to-byte backup of the Mac OS X Install ESD onto the USB with Disk Drill. Would that work?

It's worth a try. Disk Utility also has a Restore function you can try, but I've had that fail where CCC or SuperDuper! worked fine.
