Perfect timing.... I did the latest update from the apple store this morning which finished and now it won't boot. After the login it shows my user name with progressbar stuck on 50%. Luckily it still connects to wifi and my HDD is shared so I can get my stuff off over wifi. Just a few files and my VM is all that really matter.

Not really asking for help because once I have my files, I will just wipe it but if you have any suggestions for a fix, please let me know.

Thanks and Happy Friday

Hold CMD+R on startup to boot into OS X Utilities. Run volume repair in Disk Utility.

Did that thanks, didn't help. I guess I was lucky because I couldn't see my desktop, it still connected to WIFI and I could access my files on my HDD because my whole HDD was shared. This made it so much easier and I can just erase all and start from scratch.

Thanks

If you have a backup (which you should have made before the upgrade), restore it and download the combo update from the Apple site. That's how I update my Mac. I only download the original release from the App Store (10.11).
