Launch app from a folder but pinch to homescreen?

I apologize in advance for the poorly worded thread title.

If I launch a Wikipedia app from a folder called "Reference", the Wikipedia app is displayed.

If I 5-finger pinch to go back to the homescreen I get the "Reference" folder displayed. (I could've sworn that in the past, pinching went back to the homescreen, not the folder last displayed)

Is there any way to alter this behavior?

Opening an app in a folder and pressing home have always brought you back to the folder. No way to change it.
