I wasn't able to pre-order quick enough for a number of reasons. But now I'm stuck wondering whether I should bother ordering a 4S online and waiting 1-2 weeks, or showing up at a store day one and trying to snag one.

I work all day so the earliest i MIGHT be able to make it to the Apple store would be during my lunch break. Luckily its only a few miles from my office.

Any chance if im not able to stand in line overnight that i could pick one up? or should i just order online and wait patiently.

I don't think you will be able to get your hands on one during your lunch break.
iPhones sell out fast, there will be huge lines for starters and making it to about noon is not really possible.

I preordered mine 2 days back :p

That's really not true. A lot of Apple stores had the iPhone 4 all through the day and even had some left over the next day. You can't totally count out the possibility of getting one.

It would be nice if this was the case...I can't get to a store until Saturday.

I'm in the same type of situation, I am not eligible to upgrade with Verizon until SATURDAY  They refuse to push it back one day to Friday, which is insane to say the least. I've tried and tried without any success.
I would be thrilled if Apple or any other store had any units in stock on Sat morning. I'm looking to purchase a white 32gb and keeping my fingers crossed
