I'm not really understanding the point of Launchpad. Seems to me if I have to go to the dock to click it, I could just as easily click what I need from the dock. And it's just as easy to open the Applications folder for the apps that aren't on the dock. Am I missing something that makes Launchpad a needed feature?

Five finger claw on the trackpad. No need to click on or even have the launch pad icon present on your desktop or dock.
It's a pretty interface for users (like myself) who haven't had as much history with Mac OS as you have. I've just switched from Windows and I don't find the Application folder in Finder to be a substitute for the Start Menu. So I use Launch Pad all the time.
I only keep the applications I use regularly in the Dock and I prefer a clean desktop.

Launchpad is only for beginners or converts that got an ipad first and mac second. It is useless for any serious user. Usually you will fit the always need stuff on the dock. Open the rest via spotlight/alfred maybe via the Applications folder in the dock.
Launchpad is after all nothing different than the dock application folder in grid view. Just more tedious with multiple pages rather than a quick scroll.

That is all stuff which is only in the dock to get to know it but shouldn't stay there. Once you know it you have a short cut/gesture or you just don't use it.

i HATE the dock, always have (but i've gone from a 12" powerbook to a 13" macbook pro).
i want my screen, not a section of it for the dock. so...i lock mine away, and have a single page of most-used apps at my fingertips (literally) in launchpad.
between that, an accessible folder on the desktop, and the App Switcher (command-tab), i have everything i need.

Yes, it's worthless unless you're lazy.
I set up launch pad to open via a hot corner (lower right). Put a few simple games on the first screen... everything else got moved to other pages where I never go.
This saves me one whole "click" were I to do this from the dock. God I'm worthless.

Hot corners and assigning it to a mouse button are options that come to mind as well...
