Laying down with iPhone

so as I woke up this morning and glanced at my new iPhone sitting on my nightstand, I realized something... And sure enough.

If you want to reach over and grab your iPhone from bed, youre setting yourself up for a problem. If you want to lay on your side with iPhone and see weather or email prior to really getting up... iPhone is going to keep flipping your screen until you get to landscape mode with the phone upside down...

So, I had been wondering about this. Does the iPhone go to landscape mode whenever it's horizontal relative to the ground, or only when you rotate it in such a way as to initiate landscape mode. In other words, is it the absolute orientation of the device relative to gravity, or is it the motion of the device that triggers landscape? I have been wondering if you could keep it in 'portrait' mode by rotating it gently enough -- in the demo videos it kinda looks like they sort of snap the phone from vertical to horizontal to trigger landscape, but I could have been imagining that.

It sounds like you're saying that you get landscape whenever it's horizontal, even if you are too (you're lying down). If so, that's too bad.

As far as I can tell it will only change if moved quick enough to cause the accellerometer to notice. If i turn my iphone really slowly the screen stays put.

Edit: Maybe not - seemed like it last night but I can't get safari to stay in portrait now no matter how slow i turn it.
