In need of some help - I've been trying to get an SSD drive swap done on my mid-2010 iMac 21.5", and have had the machine apart several times during my attempts to get the SSD to work. On what I thought was going to be my final try, I inadvertently forgot to reconnect the v-sync cable on the LCD controller board, and went to power it up, but the display remained dark. I realized my mistake and reconnected the v-sync cable, but subsequent attempts to power up the machine are met with the same result - it sounds like it is booting (i.e. Apple boot sound plays, I can hear fans spinning and such, etc), but the display remains dark. I removed the SSD and put the original HDD back in, was extremely careful reconnecting all of the cables, but no dice, the display still remains dark on boot. I did try shining a bright LED flashlight on the LCD, but I see nothing at all on the display, which makes me think that either the LCD is getting no power and/or no signal. First of all, would having the v-sync cable disconnected then powering the machine up somehow fry the LCD and/or the controller board? Next, I know that the ribbon signal cable head for the LCD is extremely fragile - even though I was very careful each time I reinserted the cable head into the connector on the mobo, is it possible that I somehow damaged it, which would cause the symptoms I'm seeing?

This is my first iMac, but I would think that the same rules apply as with a normal PC display - if the LCD was getting power, I would think you'd still get a backlight, but no images on the screen. Signal alone would not show anything on the screen without power. I'm leaning towards it needing a controller board replacement, but I wanted to check first to see if there may be something else that I'm missing here - perhaps I fried the LCD by not reconnecting the v-sync cable properly?

BTW, the machine worked fine up until this last attempt with the SSD - I'd had the display in and out of the unit several times prior to this, and each time it worked fine after the reinstall. It was just a bonehead move on my part to forget to reconnect that v-sync cable this last time. I was having some struggles getting it to recognize the SSD, hence the multiple attempts/disassembly (the SSD swap issues would be for another thread, though).

I did this same model years ago and when I put it together same issue. Complete black screen. I have a spare monitor I plugged in and could see the machine started fine.

Opened it back up and found the cable not attached. There are at least 3 cables connecting the panel, I'd say your power cable isn't connected. But you need to check the ribbon cables are all plugged in correctly (not offset), no bent pins and check the thin black cable is ok.

Not much people over the internet can do except wish you the best of luck. I'm leaning towards nothing is fried but instead a pulled/damaged power cable.

Thanks for the replies on this - the help is very much appreciated!! I went ahead and ordered both the LCD power/controller board as well as a replacement ribbon/signal cable. Both were relatively inexpensive, and even if I don't end up using them, they'll be good to have as on-hand spares. I'll go back and double-check my work, but I'm fairly certain at this point I have all of the cables connected (4 total - temp, v-sync, ribbon, and power). My hope at this point is that I somehow zapped the controller board or busted the head on the ribbon cable.

I know that all you folks can do is offer advice and moral support, but I do really appreciate it! I was waiting for someone to come back and say that if you forget to connect the v-sync cable that you're screwed - at least there's some hope for my iMac at this point.
