League of Legends on Mac :apple:.

League of Legends (aka LoL) (video) is an amazing DotA style RTS game. It’s got to be my favorite game currently. Problem is, I’m a Mac gamer, and this game runs on Windows. However, there’s a Mac client out there and it works just fine, just that there seems to be no way to install it. It’s one of the best games on Mac, just impossible to play. Until now.

I spent such a long time looking for a way to get the Mac client, and I found it, so I want to share the knowledge with the rest of the community so they don’t have to spend an entire week searching the Internet like I did. Anyways, I’ll put the instructions in an easy to follow, numbered order. Just follow them and You’ll have LoL working on your Mac.

It’s a free game, so even if you don’t play but you’re a Mac gamer, it’s a must have and there’s no reason not to install it ;). It’s the most amazing free game I've ever played, I highly recommend you should check it out even if you're not a fan of the game style.

As for system requirements, I'm not sure about it. It runs more than perfectly fine on my MacBook Pro running 10.6.6

  1. First step is to make an account if you don’t already have one. Just go to the account creation page and fill in the required fields. This takes less then a minute.
  2. Once you have an account, you can download and install the disk image found here.
  3. Mount the disk image and run the installer. I believe this installs the Pando Media Booster (required to play the game?) and the LoL Mac client installer.
  4. Run the file you just installed. This will install the actual client and Adobe Air (also required to play?) People I’ve helped so far have had problems with this step if they don’t install Adobe Air or if they install the game under

    Macintosh HD/Users/yourname/Applications

    instead of

    Macintosh HD/Applications

  5. Now that the file’s downloaded, you need to run it. IIRC, some generic windows will open and then close, and then the game won’t work. Next step is the hardest part of the installation.
  6. You need to download and unzip this file. You then need to take the 3 items in the unzipped folder and copy them. Then right click on the League of Legends file under applications and select “Show Package Contents”. Navigate to

    Contents/Resources/Transgaming/c_drive/rads/projects/lol_launcher /releases/0.0.0.15 /Deploy

There will be one file there. Delete it, and paste the 3 files you copied earlier.

    EDIT: NEW STEP

Riot games officially closed down the Mac client a few days ago. However, there's still a way to get it to work.
  7. You need to download this file. Then right click on League of Legends and select "show package contents". Navigate to:

    Contents/Resources/transgaming/c_drive/rads/projects/lol_launcher/releases/0.0.0.33/deploy

Place the file there and say "yes" to replace the old one.

Now league should run just fine.
  8. Launch the client, and then it will install the latest patches. It usually gets stuck near the end and you have to force quit it and then launch again.
  9. That’s it! You’re ready to play! I hope you enjoy the game on Mac as much as I do :)

Some other things that will help you enjoy the Mac client to the fullest extent :

  • It doesn’t currently seem to support USB headphones :(. You can work around this by using ones that use the headphone jack or just using your computer’s regular speakers.
  • When you’re done with a window, it minimizes instead of closing. This isn’t a big deal, just don’t mess around with it and nothing bad will happen.
  • If you do something out of the ordinary (such as let your computer go to sleep while the game is running) It occasionally won’t quit properly so next time you try to launch it, it won’t run. To fix this you need to either log out and log back in, or restart the computer. The game will be back to normal as soon as you do this, so you can go back to having fun. :D
  • If there's any problems your having with this, let me know. I'll be more than happy to help anyone out if I ever get back to checking the replies.
  • Let me know what you though of my instructions. This is my first post so I'm looking forward to any feedback.
Enjoy!

I love DotA and I have actually been wanting to play this game but gave up when I noticed its not Mac compatible. I'm going to give this game a try when I get home Thursday.

I downloaded the Mac version a while ago (it's been around for a while, just in different places), and it's not bad. I haven't played it for a few weeks, but it's decent if you like that style of game.

I have heard the Mac client isn't nearly as polished as the Windows client, but it's good that it's an option once I buy my iMac. :D

help please

When I click the play button it just minimizes and nothing happens after that

It's supposed to launch the client, called "PVP.net" (or sometimes "adl"). Make sure you don't have any things blocking it from running or have the patience for it to load. If it doesn't launch, I'm guessing this is a sign that you don't meet the system requirements? But I'm just guessing here.

Riot games has officially abandoned and closed down the Mac client .

However, there's a simple fix to this problem. I edited in a new step "7" to the first post for those who want to still play League.

Does this just add a wine wrapper?

This question may be silly but I'm not sure about it and I'll ask it! :D

Do Mac users play on different servers? My friend plays this game on Win client, would this Boompje client help to play the game with my friend or I should go on bootcamp for this...?

Nice guide man,thx a lot,but i have one problem and this happened to me in windows too,i open the lol downloader, the badoo starts installing but a error message pop up,i used to think that was a problem of firewall,or ports closed in the router but was nothing of that.

Do u know where can i download a folder of the game installed or something like that,or other launcher_?

Forget about my last post,i was doing something worng but now i installed the game as the guide says, but before a match when a display whit all the selected characters shows, a error pop up saying this

TransGaming C Runtime Library
['.\string_s.c' (700)]::mbstowcs_s(): ERROR-> invalid parameter! {expression = 'invalid MBS character'}

Somebody knows how to fix it?
Maybe i did something wrong but i dont think so

The only thing that i saw that could be wrong was that i didnt have this directory /releases/0.0.0.33/deploy,instead i have 0.0.0.35

Same Problem

I had the same problem as Mr. Crow above me. Can I get a tad bit more direction? Namely, where is that file that I must replace? Thanks mate.

I downloaded the game downloader from the provided link but as soon as I ran the app, a error popped up saying: ERROR CREATING INSTALL DIRECTORY.

Any thoughts?

Not working for OS 10.5.x?

It seems like the version of adobe air included in the most recent installer will not work on my computer running 10.5.8. I figured it out when the installer kept shutting down when it got to installing Adobe Air, and I tried to do it manually.

Is there a fix for this without me having to upgrade to snow leopard? I know, it's awesome... but (unlike LoL) it's not free. Maybe there's an earlier version of the installer that includes an earlier version of Adobe Air?

Thanks so much.

I had some issue with the install relating to Adobe Air as well when I tested the Mac client. I think just re-installing Air or uninstalling and running the LoL install worked.

LoL + VMWARE Fusion?

Has anybody attempted to run LoL within a Windows 7 Virtual Machine on a Mac with VMW Fusion? How's the performance/resolution?

I'm sure it's just fine, depending on your machine. I run it natively in WinXP on a Late 2006 (2,1) MacBook - that's a 2GHz C2D with Intel GMA 950 graphics :p aka ancient and terrible. In WinXP (Bootcamp) it runs flawlessly. The Mac OSX version gets a bit laggy in intense battles, so I tend to avoid it.

Error Message

When I try to run the downloader it says "Error Creating the Installation Directory." Does anybody know of any fixes for this?

I'm getting the same issue, try to load a game, then it minimizes and nothing happens :/, playing in a 15"macbook pro, 2010...
