Let's say one is a complete newb to programming, how long before they could make a basic application?
How basic? A hello world app will take you a day or two to understand. A app that plays a sound, a few days. A small game, a couple of weeks.
Depends entirely on the person. The sort of person who would search the forum for the question the want to ask and read the answers people have already given? Probably a month or two. The sort of person who doesn't search. They'd probably never manage.
