Learning Photoshop for Developing Applications

I design software for a living and I use Photoshop to do it. A couple days ago I started a blog to post tutorials on exactly this topic. I'm starting out simply and getting more advanced as I go along so it might just be what you're looking for.

If you want to be a graphic designer... learn the basics. You should be able to lay everything out in your mind and with paper and ink before you boot a computer.

citizenzen is right. you don't need books if you have the internet at your disposal. there are hundreds of thousands of "free photoshop tutorials" available. google it. There are also tons of free video podcasts available on how to use just about any software at the itunes store. Photoshop User TV and Photoshop Killer Tips are a couple of good free photoshop podcasts.
Adobe also has lots of free video tutorials for their products. Here's a link:

The internet is really great at getting that one specific piece of information pretty easily, but it doesn't often do the analysis or progressive learning needed to really master an application or subject without significant work. If your intent is to really master an application the concise and progressive nature of books and learning materials would really help solidify your understanding that a few tips/tricks on the web won't give you.
In this case, you can find the quick how-to's and tutorials but they are no where near as well organized as the Lynda.com video tutorials or the "Real World" photoshop book at giving you the actual production quality processes and methods of using a tool like Photoshop. http://www.amazon.com/Real-World-Adobe-Photoshop-Photographers/dp/0321604512
Lynda.com may cost a bit more but their tutorials are top notch. Most tutorials are not the 'learn the process' but rather here is a technique. Bert Monroy has a video podcast that is pretty good about describing processes while showing you examples you may be likely to encounter in your work. He did them as the "pixel perfect" podcast but may have done others. http://www.photoshopsupport.com/tutorials/bert-monroy.html
