macOS [LearningPurpose] Need to install Oracle 10g DB & MSSQL Server 2008&2008 R2 DB

Hello Dear Users,

A newbie Mac User (a week old on my MBAir early 2014 edition) and also a New User to this Forum,

So, my sincere apologies if I am posting this in the Wrong Section, but couldn't find a suitable sub-forum pertaining to my query.

Anyway, diving straight to the "Point of Concern", : P


I have to install:

1.) an "Express" Edition of Oracle 10g DB
and
2.) Microsoft SQL Server 2008 & 2008 R2 Standard and/or Developer Edition

for Learning purposes, but I dont want to waste my precious GBs of SSD Space by going the BootCamp Way and then Windows 7 (64bit) OS installation and finally, Installation of both Databases Clients,

I would prefer the Mac OS way, i.e. installation of DBes straight on Mac OS.



So, I am un-aware on "how to" proceed for the same,

Not sure about:

a.) download links for Mac OS Compatible,
b.) installation of the same,


So, need help with the same.

Oracle 10g is not available for download these days (too old). There's no officially supported OS X solution, but there are articles online about getting the Linux version to install. Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and 2008 R2 are Windows only (unsurprisingly). Oracle 10g is ancient.

Your best option is to install Windows in a virtual machine and install them both on there (although you'll probably need to download a newer version of Oracle).

You will prefer to virtualize this op. You can virtualize on the mac os or bootcamp and virtualize in the windows partition. I'd opt for the former. its what I do for several Linux and now 2012 servers I test with.



Is there a strong need for this software at listed years? I don't know about the oracle and will assume the other posters know of this.

SQL server 2008 is older I do know. So is 2008 R2 base os. OS you are fine...I see no issues with 2008 Server OS. I am not rushing in to tell my network manager I need to upgrade 60+ servers from it anyway lol.

Of potential concern is I do not know what you will do with this db on 2008 SQL but unless class or guides you are using have a dire need for it you should go 2012 for at least the SQL. Your class if really needing sql 2008 is probably teaching technologies that were deprecated in 2012. DTS packaging off the top of my head is one of them.

It took years for Microsoft to kill this, they aren't bringing it back. Now if you are learning for a grade you have to do what you have to do or project for an employer. I have been trying to get my devs to convert from dts so I can upgrade the sql cluster to 2012 for over a year now...I am biased to not having people keep this alive and well to avoid this headache for others tbh.


That and on the now free TechNet eval downloads I don't think 2008 (anything)is there. Last I was there its 2012 servers for eval download I see upfront. May have to dig around and I hope you get lucky if it has to be 2008. Or worst case I hope you have physical media.
