Do the old, official leather loops work on the new 40mm? Strange that Apple only sells them now but apparently they only fit the 44mm version.

Yes they do, if it’s an old 38mm. The 38 and 40mm Watches use the exact same straps.

Likewise the 42 and 44mm use the same straps.

There are third party knockoffs you can buy for between $20 and $50 or so that fit the 38/40mm. I bought a $20 one off Amazon for my 38mm S0. It looked and felt great for about a year or so (rotating it with a couple other bands). Eventually the leather like material (it definitely wasn’t real leather) began to peel and not look so good. I suppose it lasted long enough for $20, but I would gladly pay the Apple premium for a genuine leather loop. It boggles my mind that they never made one for the 38/40mm case size.

I may order another knockoff. I really like the loop type bands. Lately I’ve been wearing the sport loop that came with my 40mm S4. I might just get a second sport loop in another color, but the leather loop strikes a nice balance in terms of style. It’s more stylish than a sport loop, but not as formal as a Milanese loop. I think the leather loop is the most iconic band for the Apple Watch, so again it just puzzles me that Apple wouldn’t make it in both sizes.

Our family all use the knockoffs and to be honest they are really good. Worth a punt for how cheap they are.

Do you have a favorite? I’m sure many of them are made in the same place and sold under different brands. Some cost more than others, and makes me wonder if they are worth the extra.

I just went with the £10 ones, can’t find the eBay seller now.

Thanks,

That's what I did with my first one. I suspect most are made in the same factory. Mine shipped from Hong Kong in the same packaging others had posted from various sellers on eBay, Amazon, etc. The only issue I recall anyone reporting was being sent the wrong color, and sending it back was going to cost just as much as keeping it.

Mine looked and felt great for over a year, but the material started to peel back at the adapter lugs. I glued it down a few times, but it kept working loose again and the edges started to peel. For the price I should probably just order another, but I wondered if some of the slightly more expensive knockoffs, like this $30.00 (USD) one from Strapsco, might hold up better? I don't know... it's probably the same thing so once again might as well order the less expensive one. It might just be easier and cheaper to return the Strapsco if they ship the wrong color. :)
