Leave my PC as it is or go 64 bit?

Currently my PC has a Athlon XP 2700+ t-bred core running at ~2.4 ghz. I am not sure but I might want to upgrade to a 64 bit system. The processor I might buy is a Athlon 64 3000+ at ~2.0 ghz (its the only socket 754 Athlon 64 that I can find with SSE3 support). I know I need a new motherboard and all that junk but, should I upgrade? How much more of a speed boost would I notice?

I would go with a socket 939 for future proof mboard and also because it supports dual channel memory. Also I think the performance increase will be marginal since you 2700 is Oc'd to around 3000+?. And also there arent many 64bit apps out there. But i would go with it, just try to get 939 if you have the $$.

Yeah, keep it. The speed boost you'll get now wouldn't be worth the money. Wait a few years when your whole system is completely obsolete.

I say hold off on the upgrade until socket M2 is out, which should be around the second quarter of 2006.

If you are going to upgrade now, go with socket 939 instead of 754. 939 should be around well into 2007.

The Xeons dominate 64bit single core
The Opterons dominate 64bit dual core
Dual processor is better than 1 dual core and this seems to be true in all benchmarks for Intel,IBMAPPLE,AMD, etc.
You can always get a dual core dual opteron....
Single core Xeons have DDR2 out and better MoBos for dual and single processor mobos. Xeons dual cores are overpriced and crappy.

Unless you upgrade to socket 939 among other upgrades(ie video card) I doubt you'll notice any drastic improvements.

The AMD X2 processor kicks ass. I highly recommend going to a 939 and getting this dual core CPU.

Workstation processors are NEVER good for gaming. The processor is designed as a server processor, not a gaming processor. Trust me, I have tried, they suck in Quake 4.
