i am about to leave my web hosting and domain name from 1and1.com to Dreamhost.com. what's the smoothest way to transfer my domain names ? i guess i could just copy all my stuff, and throw it on to my new dreamhost account ?

If you dont mind me asking, why are you leaving 1and1? Problems? im asking this because i wanted to go from godaddy to 1and1
1 and 1 tech support is pretty hard to get in touch with! and the tech support is in the phillipines, it's not that great tech support. and also, you don't get much for your money with them with all the features,,,,

I used to have Dreamhost and switched to A Small Orange (ASO).
MOST of the responses to ASO have been positive on this board, and I've been very pleased with them in general.
I actually like Dreamhost. Been with them for years. Never experienced an outage, even on the cheapest shared hosting plan.
But that's just me.

I've had Dreamhost for a little over a year, and at first there were a few outages but they've gotten them straightened out since then. I couldn't be happier
I've had Dreamhost since December of 2005 and I haven't had any outages. There were a few server misconfigurations, which they fix quickly, and then I had a server issue with MySQL, which their solution, to my surprise, was moving me to a new server. I am quite pleased with them.
it was actually really easy for me to get in touch with their tech support. it wasn't very good, but i got transferred to tech support in less than a minute or two.
I've used soooooo many hosts, I couldn't begin to count them all. Recently, I ran some controlled speed tests on:

A Small Orange
I tested page-load speed, FTP upload, MySQL querying, and client-to-server MySQL data transfers (via Navicat).
HostGator was the fastest overall in every category except FTP upload, where A Small Orange won by a small margin.
I'm not a 1 & 1 fan at all. They took weeks to get back to me on a tech support issue involving their Newsletter tool. This, despite an auto-responder that told me it would take 24 or 48 (I don't remember which) hours.
Also, I signed up under the "get a bunch of free software" deal. Turns out, the small print says if I get the software, I'm locked into a contract for a year. That's completely my fault for not reading the fine print, but I'm pretty sure they do this because they know a lot of people don't always read the fine print.
Dreamhost's control panel bugs me. It's so ugly. And some of the newsletters the guy writes are just unprofessional. Obviously the last one, which was typed on an iPhone is extreme, but they often are just poorly written. I'm sure the iPhone one was meant to be a joke, but I'm shocked they did it.
I've been a reseller, as well as a regular hosting provider. I've had multiple dedicated servers (*nix and Win) for about 10 years now. I can honestly say that HostGator's performance really impresses me. I run a fairly busy forum on an account there, and it runs as fast as it does on my dedicated servers. Something that really surprised me, as forums are the first thing to point out systems that don't perform well.
I still have 1 account with each of these companies, but HostGator is my hands-down favorite, followed by A Small Orange. I think I may have ended up on a dud box with ASO. I hear better things about them than I experience.

I had ASO and liked their tech support. They got back to me within mins or the hr. with everything I had to ask/figure out. I did switch to 1&1 because there "is" a huge storage difference for the money that ASO couldn't match. ASO was $10 a month and 1&1 is $8 under the business plan. Both required a 1 yr. contract that you could upgrade/downgrade at any time. 1&1 has a phone number to call (I got right through and was helped asap) if you can't send an email for tech support, not sure about ASO.
I mention ASO over DreamHost because of reading here about great support and having used the support at ASO as well. I never had any down time from them and with some help from JSW here on MR, ASO seemed like a snap to use (Thanks JSW)

I've had Dreamhost for 5 years and LOVE it! Tech support is very fast to respond (via email only) and they have an easy user interface with good hosting plans.
I switched to A Small Orange due to the positive reviews here and they have proved to be a disaster in terms of my email. Mail forwarding works for a day or two and then craps out, and while complaints to tech support get it fixed eventually (for another two days), they refuse to tell me what the problem is and won't give me a contact number.
Oh yeah, and periodically they bounce a lot of emails. If things improve, I will post again. If not, BEWARE of A Small Orange.
I've got a 'root server' with 1&1 which is basically just a server with power and networking, I do all the administration myself. It's been fine after some initial hardware issues which they were pretty decent with getting sorted after I got through to the 'server team' who actually know what they're talking about. Looking at what you get for your money it's a bargain really.
I'd be more wary of using any of their managed services tho, there are some terrible reviews online, but that might just be due to their size.
I've stayed clear of their DNS management and backup MX etc.. so I can't comment about how reliable or otherwise that part is.

I've been running a rails site on Dreamhost for a few months now.
They flipped the gem version on me once and brought the site down.
Apart from that, great, i.e. they grant terminal access.
In defense of 1and1, they are the wal-mart/costco of web hosting.
I have an account there (minimum package) just for the cheap storage.
