Hello
would it harm my imac leaving it on for 24 hours a day dowloading stuff. with it being an all in one.

I restart mine everyday otherwise it would get sluggish.
And I'd turn it off at least one whole day or night once a week just to cool it donw and give it a rest. I do alot of downloading, too.

i leave mine on all day long. i check my istat every once in a while to check the ram usage. if i dont have much ram left, idk what my computer is using 4 gig of ram on, but i restart it to make it work better.

in other words no it wont effect the computer one bit but it is nice to do for it.

I agree with you. I can't understand why people leaves computer on for 24/7. I also do lots of downloading but I usually turn my PC on when I wake up and it's on for whole day and before I go to bed I turn it off. Before I had it on for all the time and it was slow, very slow.

Macs are so fast to start up so turn it off when you don't need it.

Yeah ... if you even put your mac into standby then kill the power wouldn't safe-sleep mean you could at least boot back up quicker with everything running as you want it?

Edit: looks like safe-sleep is only laptops... not 100%

I'm not sure what the OP is asking. I assumed he meant that his Mac was sleeping most of the time. Just to leave it running all day, every day, but not in sleep mode? Absolutely not for all the reasons above. But, to leave it on in sleep mode, that's fine. That's what I do. I never shut my Mac off with the power button.

Rich

it won't hurt your computer but it will hurt the planet (not to mention your electricity bill).

Blah blah blah, thats complete bull.

Leaving an iMac on 24/7 would amount to pennies per week to the electric bill. If you can't afford an extra ~$10/year in electricity I doubt you'd be buying a Mac in the first place.

I leave my PowerMac on 24/7/365 with no issues. The only concession being that I set the energy control panel to "reduced" before going to bed, except when encoding/rendering. Its much harder on the electronics to get that power surge through them every morning than to leave them on all the time.

My Mac has run all day, every day (with a few exceptions, of course), without going to sleep, for about 16 months now. Still runs as well as the day I bought it.

Mine has been on since 28-Jan-09, I've being a LOT of batch video encodes, need to restart it though, Software update keeps nagging at me that it needs to restart in order to install blah... blah...

Honestly, the only times my imac has been rebooted/off since i got it over 2 years ago is when there is an update which requires a restart, I've needed to boot into windows (boo!), or when i go off on my holidays, dont even put it to sleep.

First of all, I've had my Mac's running 24/7 with no problem at all :)

Secondly, most electronics get physically stressed, during heat-up and cool-down. That is because everything expands when it's heated up. Inside a computer, some components, heat up faster than other. That results in physical strain on the components. They are sort of bended and stretched during the heat-up... A bad soldering can suddenly crack because of that.

In the "good" old days of Silicon Graphics workstations, SGI told us not to turn of the machines for the same reason.

Leave your computer turned on as much as you want to, but go to System Prefs / Energy Saver and enable Display and Hard Disk sleep ;) That'll keep the world greener and your electricity bill lower...

Mine is on 24/7 but sleeps when I do. By the way, a quick tip for iMac owners: command-option-cd eject key combination to quickly put your machines in sleep mode. ;) (and shift-control-CD eject keys to quickly power off the display for energy saving when you'll only be away for a short time.)
