Based on mb's product refresh cycle, i don't think we'll see new mbs until Macworld or after.

TBH, I don't see Santa Rosa (the new Intel mobile platform) as a big deal. The only real improvement will be the new graphics adapter which is 3 times faster than the current one. The LED displays are nice but not really important to me. They bring colour uniformity and longer battery life.

IMHO, low.

"We're going to transition our entire line when it's economically and technically feasible," Benjamin said.

Apple's Todd Benjamin, director of portables product marketing speaking to Computerworld's Ken Mingis about the transition to LED screens.

I assume he means they will do it when its cheap enough to keep the price points where they need to be so that we will buy them.

Cheers,

LED displays in the MacBooks is possible, especially if the rest of Apple's monitors (e.g., the ACD, the iMac) make the transition to using the new displays. Not sure on the timeframe however... :)

The story posted a couple months ago about Apple ordering both 15.4'' LED and 13.3'' LED backlit screens said that the 13.3'' were ordered for 3Q 2007 and the 15.4'' were for Q2 2007. The 15.4'' was right and the MBPs got the LED screens in June.

If this report is correct for the 13.3'' also, then we'll be targeting October - November for the next Macbook revision with the Santa Rosa platform and LED screens. It won't be before October because of the back-to-school promotion, and Apple won't change the main product during the promo.

So I'm guessing Macbooks get the next revision in October or November and possibly the Macbook Pro getting a slight speed bump to 2.4/2.6. Then the Macbook Pros will get Penryn in March or so.

The Macbooks are definitely getting LED displays in the next update though. 13.3'' is a common size and they are already readily available for a cheap price. (17-30'' for iMacs, MBPs, and ACDs are harder to come by and also much more expensive right now.)

From what I remember from the official press release released by Apple, it was to begin using LED screens this year, to produce a roadmap of when all laptop products will use LEDs by the end of the year and that roadmap to be completed by the end of 2008... hopefully.

The 17" screens are more problematic and Apple has said it's entirely dependent on the mercy of suppliers to produce a solution.

All in all, Applle has a lot of room to manoeuvre as the official line is basically a series of intents, but we should know more when the roadmap is released,

zioxide is dead right to point out the rumours of the 13.3” LED screens being ordered. However, I’m not sure if they were confirmed and some people persist in saying that this is evidence of a new ultraportable machine.

I think it’s feasible that the next MB update will have LED screens, but like all future Apple products, I would never bet on what i think. :p
