LED MBP - Inconsistent brightness down screen

hi guys

got my MPB today. 2.2GHz etc etc

anyways.. love it. But I have noticed that the screen is brighter at the top, and steadily gets ever so less bright the lower down the screen you go. And yes it has a subtle yellow hue but only on the bottom quarter of the screen.

I know the yellow screen issue has been discussed, but my problem is that the screen is perfect at the top half, and less than perfect at the bottom half.. mainly noticeable on a white page, but also noticeable on the desktop. I do apologize if this has been discussed elsewhere.

The icons at the top of the page look crisp and rich, while the dock looks a bit dull and not as in focus as the top..

I hope i'm not being pedantic here... I do love the machine, but this is going to really annoy me i think.

Has anyone noticed this with theirs? What should I do?

My screens perfect (to my eye). I havn't run any "tests" to check for it, as if I cant see it I dont wish to know its there.

If its really noticeable contact apple, these things arnt cheap.

Does tilting the panel to adjust the viewing angle change it or not affect it? This will help you to establish whether you are seeing inconsistent back-light, or simply the vertical viewing angle.

I'm a perfectionist and noticed this a little on my machine but decided it was the viewing angle rather than anything else. You could always go check out a few others in the store and see if they exhibit similar behaviour. I always find it much easier to adapt, if nothing else, as long as I know EVERYONE is in a similar boat :)

yes, changing the viewing angle DOES affect the results.

I too am a perfectionist, and have a very keen eye. Could it be that I just CAN'T view the ENTIRE screen with equal brightness due to the viewing angle being ever so slightly different at the top and bottom of the screen?

If I move further from the screen (narrowing the angle) the problem is less noticeable.

I'm starting to get the feeling that these new LED based MBP's need the screen bent back a little more than my old PB17...

I will take your advice and go look at the local store and check out the white saturation on the whole screen.

Hi Scott, I strongly suspect that is the case. If this is what you're noticing, you'll likely not find any others are any better. I settled on the same conclusion - that the viewing angle is the cause. I find that by opening it to a wide angle and advanced-calibrating the panel for that angle really satisfied me.

I'm sure you'll get used to it. I've found my Thinkpad at work is similar and my coworker's MBP (pre-SR) is the same.

Do the old ccfl screens suffer from the same problems with viewing angle? Is the problem just as extreme?

^ hey Ranger... yeah seems you are right. After spending a day with the MBP.. I can concur that the viewing angle is definitely the issue. I'm still extremely happy with the machine, however, and won't be returning it. I am a graphic designer by trade, (with some audio production on the side), but I don't think this slight issue will worry me... I have a nice 20"cinema display that I can plug into at home.

Hi Scott,

glad to hear you are enjoying your MBP. They are indeed absolutely marvelous devices. Despite my reservations I do think they are the best laptops money can buy by a long shot. I'm sure it'll serve your needs as a graphic designer more than adequately. :)
