LEDs? Are they really so much better?

What are the main differences that led displays have over the old displays?
Apart from the power consumption, being more environmental friendly and the no need for warm up for being bright from the beginning?

Are the new led displays really brighter than the older ones and are they really so much better provided that they have they still have that yellow tint problem?
 
Honestly, every LED backlit mbp I've seen here at school is very yellow when not viewed straight on. That's not the case with my G4 PB display at all. There's absolutely no inconsistency with my display. Also, my display is brighter than most new pc laptops.

The LED backlit screens are probably twice as bright as mine by comparison.

LED and viewing angle has nothing to do with each other. The MBP sadly just have a inferior panel these days... :(
 
Light emitting diodes have a proposed lifespan of at least 100,000 hours. That would be almost ten years without switching them off. Damage on keyboards or displays are the weightest reasons of broken-down notebooks. The CCFL-backlights of my Sony Vaio stopped working after 4.5 years of normal use.

No yellowing at my last-generation LG display.
 
My LED MBP has no yellowing issue and I compared it side by side with my old CCFL.

To answer your question, I find the LED display is much brighter and reaches full brightness much quicker. While the CCFL has a "warmup" period, the LED does not.

However if I didn't compare them side by side, I wouldn't have noticed the difference. I was very happy with my old MBP's display.
 
LED screens don't contain any Hg. Apple is trying to eliminate that from their entire product line. They are also brighter, have a longer life, and they reach their full brightness level much faster than their CCFL counterparts.
 
nicest display i have ever seen on a laptop. i have a matte finish and am real fussy about displays. the only thing i have seen that comes close are the vaio screens but those have a glossy glass look that is not good for graphic designing.

about 4 years ago i started with this one: http://review.zdnet.com/laptops/sony-vaio-tr-series/4505-3121_16-30469042.html and moved on to the z series in quest of a laptop that works in the field for camera work (even had a this one but sent it back to get the MBP:

The screens are nice but the rest of the cases are pretty much junk after a few extreme trips. And as soon as the warranty expires everything goes to pot is seems. Screens were not good in sunlight either, but not sure if ANY laptop does well there. I am trying the MBP now as I have given up on ultraportables and i guess I will bite the bullet on weight, but hoping the box will last longer in the jungle. For example, I had a sony screen crack in India (hot) and a hard drive fail on Everest. So I started taking two laptops (one for parts).

The only gripe i have about the new mbp is that the bat only lasts for 2 hours. hoping to get some help there!

A couple of things come to mind, here:

1. The MBP is absolutely not designed for the rough and tumble of ex-home/office use. You really should be looking at the likes of the Panasonic Toughbook for a hardier case. To be fair to Sony et al, most office notebooks will come to grief when used outside of their intended environments.

2. Either you have a defective battery, or your low battery life could be due to the conditions you are operating it in. Not sure what your ambient working temperature is like in the jungle, but I would bet your fans are working harder than normal, which decreases battery life. Aluminium is not a good insulator, so while it allows heat to escape, it also absorbs surrounding heat better than plastics.
Furthermore, operating your screen at full brightness will not get you Apple's published battery life of 5+ hours (which is unachievable, anyway).


As a general piece of advice, if you find your CPU racing, check your Activity Monitor in your Utilities folder and ensure you have All Processes selected (default is My Processes) and see what is clogging up your MBP. Quite often an errant uncompleted print job will drain your battery and your nerves.

The old ones had one backlighting tube at the bottom, so you could enjoy a bright light row at bottom and darker top if the light diffusion is bad. Now the new LED panels have one LED row at the top and one at the bottom, and they can have different color temperature, for e.g. 6500K at top and let say 5500K at the bottom. What an innovation, 2 in 1! you don't have to switch profiles, just move a window from the top to the bottom and you can check your pictures in a nice warm yellowish tone. :apple: should be praised for buying any junk panels and giving us this amazing feature! :D
 
My Macbook Pro had perfectly uniform color (which didn't look yellow at all to me), and was really bright-as good or better than a DESKTOP monitor, which is saying something. (Of course my desktop monitors are a few years old, but then...)

After seeing it for myself, I have no doubt LCDs with LED backlighting are the future of displays. I can't wait until desktop monitors and then LCD TVs switch over. I really hope my next HDTV uses LED backlighting (it's gorgeous now at a year in, but I love that LED models will STAY that gorgeously bright, use less power, etc.)

It really is fantastic, and I won't hesitate to spend the extra money on LED backlighting on models where there's a choice.
 
LEDs are better

I have the new 15'' macbook pro and my girlfriend has a white macbook.

Disregarding the resolution differences, my macbook pro's screen looks alot nicer. The macbooks display seems a litle washed out and more gainy than my MBP.:apple:
