The Left 4 Dead bundle doesn't really cost a lot of money, but I was wondering whether it was worth buying if I would only use it as a single player game.

It's supposed to be cooperative but I never play online or with friends (which doesn't mean I don't HAVE friends :D ). Is the single player experience equally rewarding ?
 
The single player portion has been recommended for everyone new (like myself) to play through to learn the maps, but ultimately the game is designed for online play with other people. Although the bot teammates are fairly well programmed, they have no strategy.

So in a word: no. The single player experience is not equally rewarding.
 
Maybe I should have put my question differently. But from what you're telling me, I should at least have $10 worth of fun...

I only buy older (that means cheap) games. I already bought Civ 4 complete for $10 on Steam, and left4dead seems like a good deal, too. Right then, next. Half Life 2 complete...
 
Does anyone know how this works over LAN? Always have to have internet connection for L4D 2? I'm happy to buy a few licenses (the 4 pack is a decent value, although I already bought one) but I'd prefer to capitalize on our good LAN speed and not be debilitated by my crappy Internet (512kbps).
 
I suggest buying L4D2 for $6. You'll get $6 worth of fun for sure. Plus you get one of the maps from L4D1 and the survivors from them as well. I enjoy the games single player, I def got $6 of single player fun out of it and even more multiplayer. And since these games are so popular who knows you might have a time down the road where some people would want to play randomly and you'll have it available. This has happened to me even though I'm mostly a single player gamer.
 
I disagree, single player l4d is great fun too. MuLti play is fun too. Get it today, you can't loose. aND you'll get the latest episode dlc for free!!

Single player is horrible.

The bots are verging on worthless and irritating. They heal you during big attacks, take all the good items and they don't give you pills if they're holding some.
I had to suffer this last night as my internet connection is fast, my friends are not. I tried with randoms but they weren't a good bunch and servers were lagging horribly so I resorted to single player to experience the new L4D1 campaign.

It's a multiplayer game. Random players can be good at times. Around 20% of the randoms I play with I add to my friends list because they were either good or just fun to play with. Playing with friends is the absolute best thing to do with this game. It just becomes addictive, chaotic hilarity.

Is LAN-based multiplayer possible?

It's not a question of piracy, but if I want to play the campaign with 1-2 other friends, will we be restricted by the slow Internet speed? I guess I'm asking if I can host the game locally, or only through a server accessed via the Internet? I'm fine to authenticate accounts or whatever online, but I don't want net lag, if it can be avoided.

I should add, this'll probably determine whether or not I buy the 4-player pack, if it's hosted online then gameplay will be mediocre at best, but if it's at LAN-speeds, then it's worth while.
 
LAN is possible. I sometimes play with my girlfriend who uses another computer on our network. It works really well actually... you and any LAN users can host a local server, or if you're down 1 person you can play online. If you're hosting the person on your LAN will have no lag.

As I said it's a really nifty system!
 
Thanks, Dagless. That's just what I was hoping for. That combined with the info on this thread will enable me to set up some awesome lan parties.

My only remaining concern is the graphic gore in L4D2, as my kids (5, 3 and 1.5) love watching us play video games, but I don't want to traumatize them. No option to dial that down in a setting or something, is there?

My 512kbps download continues to chug away, 60% done after 27 hours. Slow and steady may not win the race, but I will cross the line :)
 
I've seen an option saying Gore but I've never clicked it. Mines on high so I imagine there's either a low or off option.

I know that some countries (Germany and Australia at least) have censored versions of L4D2 that have vanishing bodies, no gore and one type of infected removed.

L4D1 is considerably less violent. What makes L4D2 more is the dismemberment system they have inplace, and a focus on melee weapons which splatters blood all over the "camera".

Over the internet, can Macs make their own L4D2 server (i.e. private server) or do you have to join special dedicated servers ?

I really like CS but I'm bummed that I can not host a game over the internet from my Mac for some friends (I can only host LAN only games). The only internet option I have in CS is joining a dedicated server. I was hoping for a Steam FPS where I could host a game over the internet.
 
I gave in today and bought L4D2. I'm also a single-player only type of gamer, but for <7EUR I believe it's an OK deal.

How do I turn on the FPS-indicator?

(I'll have to wait a few hours before playing - the Steam servers seem quite overloaded)

under settings keyboard, make sure advanced settings check enable console.

the press ~ key to bring up the console

type in net_graph 1
up comes the FPS indicator
net_graph 0 to turn it off. enjoy!

You'll have a lot of fun.
 
I have disagree with most other people in this thread. I have had a lot more fun playing Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 offline in single player than I have playing multiplayer online.

The exception to this has been when I have played with "meatspace" friends, makes all the difference, having people you can actually communicate with.

Great game though - so much fun.
 
Hey guys I have a slightly older iMac (5,1) and never had any trouble with games before now, but I am getting a video card not support message with Left for Dead 2. Is this for real? Here's my specs I thought the X1600 was still supported?

The x1600 is not supported under OS X. It tells you under the OS X system requirements section.

Even with the cut down Australia version I wouldn't play l4d in front of kids that young. Thats not me being judgemental though, it just seems incredibly bleak and intense/violent. Its the most intense game ever and even with the gore off its going to be overflowing with potentially disturbing imagery.

I have a two y/o daughter who also loves watching games and she absorbs things like a sponge.. There's just stuff I wouldn't want her absorbing yet, lol.

Ah so you are Sneakybison then. I keep seeing you pop up on Steam and forgot where I added you from.

Btw, I agree Darkplace was an awesome TV series.
 
I purchased L4D1 for single player shooter. After one episode the game becomes incredibly monotonous and dull. I never finished it; and I typically finish all the games I start. It wasn't worth the money for me, and I paid $4.99 during the holiday last year.
