Does anyone know if my machine will run Left 4 Dead?

MacBook Pro 15"
2.16GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo
3 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
BootCamp/Windows XP
80GB Hard Drive
ATY,RadeonX1600 (128 VRAM)

L4D is built on the aging Source platform, as far as I know. You should have no trouble running it at good settings

Sounds good, thanks. Also, I do graphic design and audio recording (CS3, Pro Tools LE, Logic Pro). And my 80GB HD is pretty much out of room. Most of my audio files and design work are on a 250GB external HD but the software themselves, along with XP on a 30GB partition, doesn't leave much room. Is it out of the question to install a new hard drive on this particular macbook pro?

guru3d.com did some benchmarks with 23 video cards. they stated the 8600gt 256 would no longer cut it for high quality on decent resolution. so i dont know how well the 1600 will do. heres a link

Yeah, I just replaced my iMac CD with the x1600 because it wasn't running too hot with the most recent games. But L4D is an exception, as it is built on a platform that was designed a while ago, and I have spent countless hours playing CS:S at good settings and a good res.

My iMac runs it just fine. I can run high settings under single player, and medium-high settings when playing online. I am sure that my 256mb card puts some hurtin to the 128, but you should at least be able to play at low settings. :apple:

Update! I finally got ahold of the demo and it worked flawlessly so I went and picked up the full version. Works great at 1440x900 resolution and medium settings.

I don't get why people say the Source engine is ageing. It's in the same situation as any other long-running engine except they don't add plastic wrap to every textures. It looks more realistic and gritty to me than Unreal Tournament 3 and co. Supports projected shadows, soft shading and all that...

Valve's Source engine is state of the art. So is Unreal 3.x.

The Source engine is extremely flexible and can run on a wide range of hardware which is very commendable. It would be a mistake to take that as "aging".

I dont know ***** about this stuff but all I know is I've never seen a game run smoother on my Mac
