Why on earth have Apple removed the arrows in the Photos app?
I'm assuming this is an iOS 5 "features" an not specific to the 4S.

I can't understand what their reason for it would be. It used to be really useful in switching between a standard and an HDR photo to see which has come out best.

Found this really annoying, too, for the reason you said.

Maxburn, the swipe right and left has an animation involved, and makes it much harder to tell which pic (HDR or regular) looks better. The arrows didn't use an animation. Not redundant.

My Take on "Arrow Removal" & Two Workaround Apps

PhazonUK & g35:

I hear you!

Just saw your posts since I frequently a) look around trying to figure this Arrow Removal Nonsense out, and b) try to find the best workaround. I saw an article on mashable about this today and commented. I'll put that comment here, too, since it involves two apps that, while not perfect, at least have arrows. Maybe you'll find it useful...

Holy smoke! As an artist/photographer, the loss of the little next/last arrows in Photos.app (with iOS 5) has caused me *no* end of grief.

When I edit images I do all kinds of subtle color and value tweaks, so my Camera Roll has dozens and dozens and dozens of s l i g h t l y different versions of the same image. The only way to accurately compare and judge the differences is by a/b'ing them...with those arrows. Swiping is utterly useless for that. I have tried--repeatedly--and just can't fathom why Apple's removal of the arrows somehow constitutes an improvement/streamlining/savings.

I use two apps as workarounds, but both have their shortcomings: Yi Zhu's "Ultimate (Photo) Albums" has the bleeding arrows (woo-hoo!), yet takes awhile updating new additions to the Camera Roll since you have to return to the main menu, and any screen grabs taken within it (to, say, compare non-adjacent images) require a re-start of the app. Linkus' "Photo Manager Pro" sports the arrows and full EXIF data...but requires manual image importing. Of course, neither app can delete photos due to Apple's iOS strictures.

So...all that hassle, for what? I have no idea. Apple's ease of use and simplicity policy is all fine and dandy--until it becomes needless dumbing-down. Maybe Apple never heard that a whole new genre was created based on their product: iPhoneography. :|

I also used to use the arrows very frequently and hate that they removed them. They weren't hurting anyone being there. If you want to use them you can, if not then just swipe

And is it just me, or did iOS 5 also remove the ability to select multiple photos by swiping continuously left/right/down without having to take your finger off the screen? Since iOS doesn't have a "Select All" button, the above technique was the next best thing.

They did as far as I can tell, and I don't know why. I used that feature all the time.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A405 Safari/7534.48.3)

Yeah, the lack of those arrows is the one thing the really bugs me about ios5. Used to use them all the time, not so much for the comparing HDRs but I just found it an easier quicker way to flick through. Annoying.
