I gotta be honest I couldn't derive positioning from those photos. But I can say that my 12.9" Pro gets warmest near the bottom when connected to the keyboard case, which would be the left side when held upright. Whether it's battery heat or SoC transmitting its heat in that directions, it's certainly how it is

have you got the ipad pro 12.9 2018 or the older one?
actually this morning I was in the apple store and I saw that even ipad pro 11 on display heats up in the left side. So I think is normal. There seems to be a double thread about a similar issue.

If your device develops unusual heat in the lower left area, even during idle at normal/low brightness, and if this issue remains even after a full software reset, it is very likely an issue with one of the controller chips located there. You might also notice increased battery drain. Software updates wont help in this case, so consult Apple service.
