Hey, I have been working on an app and am wondering if I can legally use popular songs if I give credit to the artist? I have been researching on the internet but can't seem to get much, mostly apps to create music.

Practically and legally speaking, you cannot use anything without explicit written permission from the copyright holder.

Permission isn't enough. To use more than 30 seconds of a song you'll need to pay royalties. Unless you're friends with the band and work something out, using "popular" music can get very expensive.
