sicko. normally I'd follow the news race game. so forgive my shock.
you are racing to report a premature passing of a very important person.
What am I going to do now? a trustworthy soul who won't be able to give us what we've grown up expecting. No one does it the way John Peel does it. You can't just hire another jock to do the same thing. The world really has changed today.

Seriously shocking - he was the nicest DJ in music broadcasting. Could we treat this trhread with some respect - it shouldn't be a race to report news like this.
my academic advisor here at college is from England and he was telling me about him just minutes ago. from what he said, it seems like this guy was a great dj; he'd always get new music to play on his show.

i found college radio to be superb. John Peel was the exception to the usually talentless standard DJ on UK Pop stations.
I was shocked when I heard about this as he wasn't that old. I only listened to his show the other week. He was great and single handidly made some bands and artists.

John Peel totally shaped my taste in music, I listened to his show most nights from 1979 - 1983. I would say he is responsible for my wide taste in music & gave me the urge to pick up a bass guitar & join a punk band! John show me that there was more to music than the pop charts, and through his sessions gave many bands a good start with his sessions.

John Peel rest in peace. Or rather rest to a suitably eclectic soundtrack of indie, dance and hip hop.
I rember once hearing him play a white label and comment "I played that at 33. I played it earlier at 45 and think it sounded better, but I'm not really sure which speed it should be."

I heard about this on the way home, what a damn shame, John Peel was a constant voice throughout my childhood, he was responsible for introducing me to more new bands than anyone else.
A constant island of reason and good musical taste, he never gave much credence to popularity, and always said exactly what he meant.
A giant. He will be sorely missed.

John Peel did so much for the little guys in music. He championed some great upstart bands throughout his career, and he'll be sorely missed.
I didn't get chance to listen to the radio show as much as I'd liked, but his sessions always featured on my CD 'to-buy' list; sadly, it seems we've lost someone truly unique.

I was really taken back when i read this, i couldn't believe it. really really shocked.

If it did nothing else, I would be forever in debt to the internet because it allowed me to finally listen to John Peel's program. The number of bands I found because of him is countless, and I worry about how I will ever find new ones from here out.

I caught this in the NY Times Obits the other day - made me really sad. One of the first CDs I ever owned was a Peel Session: Joy Division, which later morphed into New Order.

I used to listen to his shows a fair bit. Although he was never one of my favorite DJs, he always managed to provide my ears with hours of enjoyment. RIP John.
