Upgraded the family iMac last night, and now Lego Universe is unfunctional. Digging under the covers, it uses the Windows-to-Mac wedge Cider from Transgaming, and this is what seems to be failing. By walking around the normal launch sequence and doing a "show package" on the app's icon, I can get it to boot by starting up the base process in the MacOS folder in the package. However, once it starts up, all the graphics are scrambled, even though the sound comes through.

This one might take some time to sort out, as there's no mention of it on Transgaming's website, and there seems to be a lot of titles that use it.

I was able to get it working by showing the application contents and running the "cider_noui" executable. Everything worked fine with it.

I also updated to Lion and Lego Universe did not work. Had a live chat with someone on the live help at Lego Universe. They said that Lion caught them by surprise and were working on a Patch and workaround presently. He would not say when but said it would be "soon". He also said it should automatically patch when it becomes available but Universe crashes as soon as you click on it so don't know how that will work. He also claimed they would send out an email when they had a workaround done.

I just tried the "cider_noui" method and it opened it up and it's going through all the downloading/patching that it did when it was originally installed. See what happens when it's done. Will update since this seems to be the first place on the web I saw any discussion happening.

Was this the legit version of Lego Universe?

The one from the DVD?

If so thats bogus. Cider is lame! I hate transgaming so much!

Yes it's the legit game from the cd. I tried a new install with "cider_noui" it still does not work. Get sound but no graphics. Tried to post a message on the lego message boards for some help and the mods still have yet to approve the message.

Play LEGO UNIVERSE on LION

HERE IS THE SOLUTION:
OPEN FINDER
RIGHT CLICK ON THE LEGO APP
SELECT "SHOW PACKAGE CONTENTS"
CLICK ON "CONTENTS"
CLICK ON "MAC OS"
DOUBLE CLICK "cider_nouui"
THIS STARTS THE TERMINAL AND AFTER A FEW SECONDS THE PATCHER WILL LAUNCH AS USUAL

YOU ALL ARE WELCOME.

Thanks soulonice407, but that solution has been around for a few days including Lego's website unfortunately it does not work for everyone or all the time. It sometimes comes up without graphics or will crash shortly after starting. Thanks, waiting for Lego to fix it right.

^Might I say something real quick? :)
(To the above post, apparently the original poster understood the issue. :p)

LEGO and the developers directly connected to it are not to blame here. I contacted them on the issue when it arose around DP3 of Mac OS X Lion, and if they had been the ones pulling the strings - this was two months before Lion's release, or was it one? :p - then a permanent fix would have been issued by now...

The issue arises from Cider itself, the program used to "wrap" LEGO Universe and make it functional "natively" on Mac OS X. Transgaming, the developers of Cider, apparently failed to update their program in time, and thus not only LEGO Universe but many other Cider-run games are broken.

A fix was supposed to have been released by now, but it appears as though Transgaming still can't get their act together. Should have updated it while it was still in beta. Tsk tsk tsk.

Just keep in mind, though, it's not LEGO's fault. ;)

In the meantime you could always fire up a VM, such as Virtual Box. I tested it out this morning and it seemed to work well enough. :)

I'd say it's the developers fault that decided to use CIDER instead of writing a native app. Blizzard has no problem doing same day release of all their products for both mac and windows.

CIDER just lets them be lazy
