Has anyone kept track of how long it takes to charge their iPhone? I've been having issues with mine not charging all the way. I've tried restarting it and hard reseting, neither of which helped.

Took it to the local apple store on friday with an appointment at the genius bar. They told me no one has come in with charging issues at that location. He told me to try a restore via itunes first. I tried that and i still don't believe my phone is fixed, so i'm gonna go back today.

I got it to fully charge by leaving it on the charger for like 11 hours. Battery was around 50%. Seems way to long. Last night I put it on the charger with the batery a little bit above half. Woke up today and with 8 hours of charging time, it was only around 95%. No ac plug and stays never reset. There still going from the day before.

I also noticed that if it's plugged in, that if I check the usage stats, they both go up that the same time. The only time I can get the usage meter to stop moving is to unplug it. What are everyone's thoughts? Should apple be replacing this thing? I don't think I can handle having a phone what won't charge all the way overnight. I hate to think how long it would take to charge from empty!

I've heard other people talk about their battery problems.. I haven't had any yet (knock wood).

My charging time depends on the source and what I'm doing while charging. For instance, if I'm charging the phone and still playing with it while it is plugged in, it takes longer to charge. I feel (I have no real numbers to support this) like it charges faster if I plug it into the wall using the adapter rather than charging it via USB from my iMac. Plugged in to my iMac it takes it about 4 hours to charge from a dead battery. Plugged in to the wall seems to takes less than that.. maybe 3 hours.

I try to refrain from charging the battery unless it is under 20%, and I always charge it all the way up.

Wow. That's way shorter than what I'm dealing with. My numbers are with me charging via that wall adapter it comes with. I also have a car adapter from my ipod. I get the same results, rulling out a faulty dock, cable or wall adapter.

I bought mine on Saturday afternoon (7.07.07) and charged it all the way up by around 7pm while/after syncing. I used it a bit that evening and all day Sunday. Very few calls, watched a couple music videos. Mostly web stuff. I have been turning my Wi-Fi on and off as needed and using EDGE when out and about. I have Mail set to check my .Mac every 30min. Maybe want to change that. The only issue I had was iPod stopped playing when using Safari during 2nd song. Powered off and back on (is that a hard reset?) and that seemed to fix it. Other than that haven't used the iPod much. My usage says about 5.x-6 hours, 6.5 at the most. Just curious, thought that seemed a little low. Haven't really used it for calls yet. Waited till it was down to under 5% and played a music video till it died this morning. It is now plugged in (AC) to charge. I would expect 3-3.x hours. Definitely has worked great. Will take it in I find that I don't get much out of it.

This is right from apple.com/batteries
Standard Charging
Most lithium-ion batteries use a fast charge to charge your device to 80% battery capacity, then switch to trickle charging. That’s about two hours of charge time to power an iPod to 80% capacity, then another two hours to fully charge it, if you are not using the iPod while charging. You can charge all lithium-ion batteries a large but finite number of times, as defined by charge cycle.

Should be about the same for the iPhone

That's what I figured. Maybe mine doesn't fast charge at all and is always stuck in trickle mode?

I've never used the wall charger. I've been very impressed with how quickly the USB dock charges the phone, though. (Compared to some Verizon BlackBerrys I use at work).

Mine has been charging from fully dead for about 2 hours 15-25 minutes and almost 100% charged. Just a sliver left that isn't green. And it charged most of the way in 1 hour 40 minutes. Off AC.

BTW, does it say when it is fully charged? Change from green or add something to the large center screen symbol?

When it's fully charged the indicator will go from the battery with a lightning bolt, to a battery with an electrical plug symbol through it.

The charging icon changes to an ac plug when it's full and the battery in the center is fully green.

You should bring it back to the store. Sounds like you're having the same issue I did. In 8 days I could never get a full charge, no matter what I tried. My usage never showed that it had ever been fully charged. I called Apple Care, they had me restore it - still no luck. Yesterday I brought it in and they gave me a new one and it charged with no problems. It's too soon to know for sure, but the battery seems to be lasting longer as well.
hope this helps.

I power mine down completely.

I was having trouble initially with it only charging to about 80%.

Since doing a full powerdown after you plug it in, it has been charging to 100%.

I leave mine charging overnight, I have no idea how long its taking.

I bought my beloved iPhone on 6/29 and found that it was impossible to get it to charge to 100%. After 3 visits to the genius bar, they gave me a new unit on Saturday. This one took 14 hours on the wall charger to finally show the usage stats today. Arrrgghhhh! Either the calibration software is buggy or some of these first production iPhones have defective batteries.

Please release a fix Apple! Who wants to be worried about if there battery is charging or not?

Mine charged most of the way in less than 2 hours and a full charge w/ plug icon in small battery icon after 3-3:15.

The charging icon changes to an ac plug when it's full and the battery in the center is fully green.

People are always saying this, but my battery at the top right is showing a plug icon and the middle battery is all green except for a tiny (and I mean tiny) part.

It should be fully charged, but when I check the usage menu it still has the blanks. It says usage will be displayed after iPhone is fully charged.

But other than that, it acts like fully charged iPhone. I've gone almost 2 days without having to recharge and that's with some heavy wi-fi and ipod use.

Maybe it's just some sort of software bug.

Update:

I had an appointment with the genuis bard at my local apple store (same store where I bought my phone). Pointed out the problems to them and explained what I had done so far. They offered to exchange the unit for a new one, and I took them up on the offer.

I get home plug it up and resync all my stuff. After it was done, I just let it sit in standbye to charge up fully for the first time. Less than an hour went by and I got the all elusive ac plug icon and a fully battery meter! Usage stats reset to zero and started counting as soon as I unplugged it.

This has been my first problem with an apple product and it was corrected quickly and painlessly :). A+ Apple!

Mine does the same thing. I always charge it overnight, but it still shows blanks on the usage menu.

At first, it would only show about 75% charge on the green battery, but after I fully discharged it, it's at the "all green escept for a tiny part" stage.
