I am a long time Lenovo fan and have had 3 different X1C, 2 different X1 Yoga’s and a few other Lenovo laptops throughout the years like the Yoga 910, Yoga 920 and the Yoga 930.

This year I decided to spring for a loaded X1 Yoga 4th gen with the following specs:

● Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-8665U with vPro
● Operating System: Windows 10 Pro 64
● Display Type: 14.0" 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) 470 nits, IPS with Dolby Vision™ HDR400, multi-touch
● Memory: 16GB LPDDR3 2133MHz (O
● Hard Drive: 1TB Solid State Drive M.2 PCIe-NVMe, Opal
● Warranty: 2 Year premium on site
● Graphics: Integrated Intel® UHD Graphics 620
● Camera: IR & 720p Camera with microphone
● Pen: ThinkPad Pen Pro
● Fingerprint Reader: Fingerprint Reader
● Keyboard: Backlit Keyboard - US English
● Wireless: Intel® 9560 802.11AC vPro (2 x 2) & Bluetooth® 5.0

The computer as configured after using 2 discount codes came out to $1,977.77. The only option I passed on was the LTE card as I don’t see the need. I have Xfinity and can use their Wifi hotspots. Those hotspots are everywhere!

This year Lenovo changed the X1 Yoga over to an Aluminum chassis and the color is now a more gray’ish than the standard fingerprint magnet Lenovo black. This does prevent fingerprint smudges and keeps the computer looking clean.

The 4K screen is eye popping and gorgeous. It’s a glossy screen but it’s not as bad as other glossy screens I’ve had. I’d prefer non glossy but it’s not offered on the 4K version. Brightness is listed at 480 nits and I’d say that pretty accurate. I had no issues viewing outdoors in direct sunlight.

Sound is good and above average for an ultrabook. I’ve heard the fan once so far and that was during Windows updates. The bottom of the machine did get warm but not to the point of being uncomfortable.

Trackpad is smooth and works great. The trackpoint is a plus for anyone who has gotten use to using it over the years. I’ve always liked the X1 using dedicated mouse keys above the trackpad. While it does make the trackpad area smaller, it’s nice to have the physical keys.

Keyboard is stellar. There is nothing close to X1 keyboards and this years X1 machines are no different. Key travel does appear a tiny bit more shallow but no complaints whatsoever. Backlight is there in typical Lenovo fashion and function.

SSD read and write are fast and the CPU handles everything I’ve thrown at it so far with no problems.

I don’t know about battery life yet as I’ve only had it for 3 days but I am getting about 6-7 hours with screen brightness at 70%-80% which is not bad considering I have the 4K UHD screen.

One bummer on this years versions the SD card slot was removed. Posts are still abundant and offer USC C, USB A, HDMI and a network extension.

Quick scores for now based on 10 being max.

Build quality = 10
Screen = 10
Keyboard = 10
Sound = 8
Trackpad = 9
Battery life = 6
Windows 10 = 9
SSD speed = 10
CPU = 8
GPU (integrated) = 7
Fan noise = 9
Heat = 8
Ports = 9 (docked a point for removing the SD card reader)

So far I am happy with the purchase and I’ll keep this thread updated if I encounter and issues.

Bios smios…..

Well I updated the BIOS through Lenovo Vantage and the flash went bad... Was able to sort of recover from it but am now getting blue screens of death a few times a day.

Lenovo support tried everything under the sun = no dice!. Now they are saying 6-8 weeks for a replacement so I ordered a Dell XPS 2in1 with the new 10th gen CPU.

Not a Yoga issue and not a Lenovo issue just a bad BIOS flash and I don't blame anyone as it can happen. It boots fine (sort of) and I can use it for a few hours at a time before blue screen of death... Reboot = Rinse, lather, repeat.

Don't let this sour anyone on the Yoga as it is a killer machine. I just don't want to wait 6-8 weeks for a replacement. I guess I could order another and then send this back but I can only use my special Lenovo discount code once a year so if I went that route I'd need to pay full price.

I ordered the Dell XPS 2in1 7390 using my discount with them and with these specs.

10th Generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-1065G7 Processor (8MB Cache, up to 3.9 GHz)
13.4" 16:10 UHD+ WLED Touch Display (3840 x 2400) 500 nit
512GB PCIe NVMe x4 Solid State Drive Onboard
16GB 3733MHz LPDDR4x Memory Onboard
Intel(R) Iris Plus Graphics
Windows 10 Pro
Killer AX1650 (2x2) built on Intel WiFi 6 + Bluetooth 5.0
Premium support with onsite service 2 years
$2300 as configured but $1830 after my discount.

I will make a thread on it after it arrives.

I still have the Yoga for now so if you have any questions ask before I ship it back. I'll prob mail it back end of next week...

Okay so I did some more digging and I do not think the BIOS is to blame. I believe it's a power management issue. Just before I flashed the BIOS I installed a script I often use on X1's that allows them to remember the KB backlight settings after sleep or reboot. For those who don't know with Lenovo's you have to hit FN + Space every time to turn KB backlighting back on. It the one maddening thing about them that I wish Lenovo would change...

So I formatted, reinstalled and got an updated version of the script. I was using an older version that I had saved to my OneDrive. Installed it and so far so good. No blue screens of death yet today.....

I'll keep an eye on it but for the time being I will let my XPS order ride and keep the return of this active.. I'd MUCH rather keep the X1 Yoga so I am hoping this does the trick...

Update: No dice!

I do not think it's a BIOS issue at this point and believe it's a power management problem. I removed my KB script and was still getting blue screens. Formatted the HD, reinstalled vanilla windows 10 and still blue screens...

Sadly, I think it needs to go back to the mothership unless anyone has ideas - I am all out of things to try...

My Dell is on the way so hopefully it's solid. I have not had a Dell in about 6 or 7 years. I had the XPS 13" the 1st year they came out with the bezel'less display - whenever that was.

If all else fails and the XPS is terrible, I might just snag the X1C 7th Gen currently on sale at Costco....
