I am a long time Lenovo fan and have had 3 different X1C, 2 different X1 Yoga’s and a few other Lenovo laptops throughout the years like the Yoga 910, Yoga 920 and the Yoga 930.
This year I decided to spring for a loaded X1 Yoga 4th gen with the following specs:
● Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-8665U with vPro
● Operating System: Windows 10 Pro 64
● Display Type: 14.0" 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) 470 nits, IPS with Dolby Vision™ HDR400, multi-touch
● Memory: 16GB LPDDR3 2133MHz (O
● Hard Drive: 1TB Solid State Drive M.2 PCIe-NVMe, Opal
● Warranty: 2 Year premium on site
● Graphics: Integrated Intel® UHD Graphics 620
● Camera: IR & 720p Camera with microphone
● Pen: ThinkPad Pen Pro
● Fingerprint Reader: Fingerprint Reader
● Keyboard: Backlit Keyboard - US English
● Wireless: Intel® 9560 802.11AC vPro (2 x 2) & Bluetooth® 5.0
The computer as configured after using 2 discount codes came out to $1,977.77. The only option I passed on was the LTE card as I don’t see the need. I have Xfinity and can use their Wifi hotspots. Those hotspots are everywhere!
This year Lenovo changed the X1 Yoga over to an Aluminum chassis and the color is now a more gray’ish than the standard fingerprint magnet Lenovo black. This does prevent fingerprint smudges and keeps the computer looking clean.
The 4K screen is eye popping and gorgeous. It’s a glossy screen but it’s not as bad as other glossy screens I’ve had. I’d prefer non glossy but it’s not offered on the 4K version. Brightness is listed at 480 nits and I’d say that pretty accurate. I had no issues viewing outdoors in direct sunlight.
Sound is good and above average for an ultrabook. I’ve heard the fan once so far and that was during Windows updates. The bottom of the machine did get warm but not to the point of being uncomfortable.
Trackpad is smooth and works great. The trackpoint is a plus for anyone who has gotten use to using it over the years. I’ve always liked the X1 using dedicated mouse keys above the trackpad. While it does make the trackpad area smaller, it’s nice to have the physical keys.
Keyboard is stellar. There is nothing close to X1 keyboards and this years X1 machines are no different. Key travel does appear a tiny bit more shallow but no complaints whatsoever. Backlight is there in typical Lenovo fashion and function.
SSD read and write are fast and the CPU handles everything I’ve thrown at it so far with no problems.
I don’t know about battery life yet as I’ve only had it for 3 days but I am getting about 6-7 hours with screen brightness at 70%-80% which is not bad considering I have the 4K UHD screen.
One bummer on this years versions the SD card slot was removed. Posts are still abundant and offer USC C, USB A, HDMI and a network extension.
Quick scores for now based on 10 being max.
Build quality = 10
Screen = 10
Keyboard = 10
Sound = 8
Trackpad = 9
Battery life = 6
Windows 10 = 9
SSD speed = 10
CPU = 8
GPU (integrated) = 7
Fan noise = 9
Heat = 8
Ports = 9 (docked a point for removing the SD card reader)
So far I am happy with the purchase and I’ll keep this thread updated if I encounter and issues.
