I still wish Apple kept the "Answering Machine" feature in one of their Leopard beta's in 2006. It allowed for a video away message and for friends to leave video messages.

Leopard iChat Answering Machine

The new iChat answering preference tab allows users to record a Video greeting to serve as an answering message when users are away from their desk. The caller may then leave a message. At this time, there only appears to be partial functionality implemented.

The ability to record video-clips has previously been suggested as a tie in to the iPhone to provide a "call ahead" feature.

Would be a great feature for FaceTime, especially with iDevices and OS X using FaceTime more frequently. Wonder why they dropped it.

Hmm, I'm thinking we should all go to apple.com/feedback and put in this request. I'm serious, I think this would be an awesome feature to have working with todays iOS and OS X features.

Missed FaceTime call appears in OS X 10.8 notifications center with a "voicemail".

I may get a "Time Out" or slap on the wrist, but with the closing discussions on OS X 10.9, this feature request is gaining more momentum, soooo forgive me for reviving it.

More have been writing Apple (developers and consumers) about adding this feature and/or combining FaceTime with iMessage in OS X. I highly recommend if you believe you'd benefit from this to write Apple here or here. :)

(Didn't see a selection for OS X general or iMessage)
