Hi All,

Quick quesiton. I am an ADC Select member and was wondering if anyone who is one knows when the GM of Leopard is likely to be available for downloading as I have a some applications that my company has developed that I require to test against the finished version of the OS for compatability checks (I'm 99.9% certain we are OK but you never know !!!!)

TIA
Neil

It won't be up until several weeks after it goes on sale. That's what happened with Tiger anyway (yes I have been a select member for some time).

Yeah I can see Apple providing a digital copy of this a week before launch. I've heard they really like to expedite pirated copies of their wares getting around.

Tiger 8A428, the GM, was available on ADC at april 18th, and Tiger went on sale at the end of April.

Are you sure? I seem to remember downloading the Tiger GM about 10 days prior to launch. The DVD, on the other hand, didn't arrive in the mail until a few weeks later.

Sarcasm aside, developers need the GM early to complete final testing of their products. That's the whole point of the seeding program.

Thanks for making the point I'd intended to make. I couldn't bring myself to do so in a civil tone at the time I replied.

Panther GM was available 10 days before. Tiger GM was not.

Check this thread, post 5 which was up on April 28, 2005, the day before Tiger was released. Still no sign of a GM on the ADC.

 I don't remember it that way at all. And according to the ADC download site, Tiger 8A428 was posted on 18-Apr-2005. Weird.

EDIT: I did a little more digging. The consensus is that the GM build of Tiger became available on the ADC site at 6:00pm PDT on 29-Apr-2005. In other words, ADC members got it the same time as everyone else.

I guess my confusion stems from the fact that I was running Tiger GM at least a week or so before my physical copy arrived in the mail.

Are you select or premier? I am select and I have clear memories of it not being available prior and of the b*tching and what not going on.

Yes they were both on there before 10.3 and 10.4. The thing was of course that they weren't labeled GM at that time so there was still speculation if they were or not.

If history were to repeat itself for the 3rd time then there should have been a new build on ADC today which in theory would have been the GM.

Of course Leopard's track to release hasn't been historical or like other versions of OS X :)

I'm select, but I think the above post is correct that at that time people didn't know 8A428 was GM but it was there, or my memory serves me wrong.

It is highly unlikely that Apple has made any changes in the GM version that would affect that stability of an application or it's ability to run. Despite the fact that you paid your $500 ADC membership fee, Apple is not likely to release a week in advance as it will certainly end up on a torrent site within hours.

So you think if Apple doesn't release it to us, developers, then it won't end up in torrent sites after October 26th? And Apple did release Panther and Tiger ,before they hit the shelves, to developers. Why should they act differently now?

It is definitely going to end up in torrents sites after October 26. Probably on October 26. Perceptually, it just looks bad if it surfaces before. For Tiger, apparently the build was on ADC just not identified as GM. To put another build of Leopard on would confirm it to be GM, and ensure its spread prior to release.

Yeah I can see Apple providing a digital copy of this a week before launch. I've heard they really like to expedite pirated copies of their wares getting around.

Believe it or not, there are some honest people out there who would like to ensure that their customers can be assured that their applications are fully supported.

Whilst it's unlikely something will not have changed that will break our applications since the last available build I wouldn't rule it out - I've been in this game for far too long to fall for this.

As both an ADC and MSDN member I have to say that in all honesty Microsoft treat developers better. Within a few days (or hours believe it or not) of any of their products going GM you will get it from MSDN.

This is the first time I have been an ADC member when an OS release is due and the lack of information from Apple is quite surprising to me.

I think there has to be some level of trust here. 99.99% with access to the seeds via ADC will not violate the NDA and will not post the seeds via a torrent site. Of course, there will always be some individuals who will do the opposite but should they have the right to spoil it for all the genuine developers out there who do respect Apple?

I can wait for it to come in the post, I can wait for it to be available on ADC but I would like the ability to tell my customers that yes, we are 100% compatible.

Guess what? These people are paying Apple for advance copies for testing purposes. It leaking to a torrent site is absolutely inevitable and will happen regardless of what Apple does, and if Apple knew about it (which they certainly do), they would care more and do something about these torrent trackers, but Apple Legal does know and doesn't care. They only go after people who break NDA by posting seeds, but not after retail copies. And even with the seeds, Apple really isn't doing much in terms of stopping or finding these people.

So get off the high horse already. Devs need Leopard for final testing. You think things might not have changed, but you never know. These people are paying for that privilege because it means that much to them, and maybe they can't get a copy that fast or in advance to test on if they weren't able to get it from ADC.

So the whole BT argument is ********. Just how many MORE people are going to download Leopard just because it shows up on a tracker a few days before release? Like those people haven't already downloaded Leopard seeds. And from the obvious ignoring on the part of Apple Legal when it comes to these NDA'd Leopard seeds that someone obviously broke, it's plainly obvious that they soooooo care that people decide to pirate Leopard a bit early. Uh huh.

Will student developers get the download link at the same time as select and premier members ?

I don't know. Can student developers right now access to Tiger GM? If you can download that off the ADC probably you'll be able to download Leopard GM as well, when it is available in ADC.

Students get access to the GM via the monthly mailing.
