Leopard is almost 4 times slower

My mac mini with 2.33ghz core 2 duo and 2gb ram with 5400rpm hard drives boots in 34 seconds.


At the apple store I tested the 2.4ghz macbook pro with 5400rpm HD and 3gb of ram and it tok 1m 50s to boot.

I tried 4 times on different machines. Same time to boot with leopard. What is going on? I though it was faster. Does my mac mini just run faster than a macbook pro? Doubt it. I left without buying. Amazing. Gonna wait for 10.5.2 at least.

Can anyone verify this?

I think all of the machines in the apple stores boot off of an XServe in the back, thus the slow loading times.

What? What in the world are you talking about? A netboot? This is not the case at all. You can ask the store employees. They are just demo machines, booting and running off of their own hard drives.
 
my 2.66ghz mac pro with 2x250gb hard disks and 8 gb of ram is acting very sluggish. time machine is backing up in the back ground and i did an upgrade, NOT a clean install. dont know what is wrong. even when i type, the characters take a moment to appear. the UI is sluggish, everything is slow! and so is the boot time... permissions were repaired.
 
clean install FTW! mine is working wonderfully, the dock is just a little sluggish when magnifying

I can confirm this.

I wouldn't judge the speed of an operating system solely based on the boot up speed. :confused:

It's nice to see you again macenforcer.
 
The Apple store machines may simply have more startup items than you do in addition to the fact that these machines are abused by the public

Exactly. Geez the amount of ridiculous excuses people are coming up with. LOL.
 
I came back from the Apple Store and every machine there ran just fine. I didn't see if they booted any faster than my MacBook Pro, but as you say Macenforcer, it's a new OS and waiting until 10.5.2 would be the ideal solution. I am waiting until at least January or February for an update to Leopard before I buy, but I will be getting one of those new MacBook Pros then too, so which ever one comes first.

Other than the booting issue (which I never tested) the machines ran fine, and many of them screamed. They were moving faster than I could have ever believed with all of that graphical eye candy that Leopard has.
 
My mini (1.83ghz core 2 duo, 5400rpm hdd, 1gb of ram) goes from powered off to in Leopard with the desktop usable and connected to the internet over airport in about 40 seconds. (Adium is logged in and my buddy list has been displayed at this point)

If any mbp is that slow, something is wrong, unless they are booting over the network as was suggested.
 
i think time machine's backing up was slowing the whole computer down and eating up a huge chunk of RAM. after its done, leopard feels so smooth.
 
I did a clean install without the extra languages, X11, and only installed the HP printer drivers (took up 6 GB !!! :) and took about 20 minutes to install) on my SR MBP and it works beautifully. I personally just don't trust upgrade options no matter what OS.:p
 
i clean installed mine after making a bootable copy of my old 10.4 and used migration assistant to bring everything over... and it flies..... safari is the fastest browsing i have ever done...and app load times are at least half

Yeah, Spotlight reindexing took around 40mins. There was a big slow down while it was being done. But now... perfect. I have 1GB of ram not used! Thats amazing!
 
I'm not yet sure about boot time - it may be slightly longer than Tiger but not by much - but Leopard is a much more responsive OS on my old 1.42GHz G4 Mac mini. Menus come up with much less delay and apps launch quite a lot faster. The new look UI is also much better than before.

The only thing that I'm disappointed in is stacks. These are a massive regression from the hierarchical menus that existed in previous Mac OS X releases. However, this is something I can live with but I'll definitely be posting a comment in the Apple feedback. All I want is an option to use the old style hierarchical menus. If they allow stack like sorting that would be even better.

I've got 8 apps open, and i've got 1.16Gb free out of 2 gig of ram, but my VM size is 39Gb's!
I've only got 19Gb free on the hard disk, so I'm not really sure what's going on there....
