I've heard Lion will only be available through the Mac App store. To get the Mac App store, you need Snow Leopard.
I an MBA that would be compatible with 10.7 but is currently running 10.5. Any way I can update to 10.7, without updated to 10.6 first?

As of now, no one has found a way that that is possible.
. Wow. So I have to buy a version of 10.6 that I'll never use just to get to 10.7? From the Apple website that seemed like the answer, but it was hard to believe.

Just download a torrent of Snow Leopard. It's only going to be illegal for like 2 hours while you download Lion, then you'll erase Snow Leopard anyway.

Apple deserves it, since having to buy and install Snow Leopard just to download Lion is not only unfair and ridiculous, but also inelegant and time consuming.

Why can't they just allow an HTTP download for non Snow Leopard users? Or just release the App Store for Leopard?

Right now, there has been no sign that you can skip an OS.

Maybe later on, no one knows.

There is a procedure out there for creating a Lion install DVD from the files you download when you purchase Lion on the app store. If you can borrow a buddy's Snow Leopard equipped Mac and buy Lion on it, you should be able to create an install DVD from those files which you can then use to install Lion on your machine.

Looks doable, and many thanks. My MBP has Snow Leopard, so this should work. It does seem that Apple needs a more elegant solution.

Believe me, this entire sitch has people banging heads on their desks wondering how Apple can be so daft about the release.

The main issues are:

1) People without Snow Leopard can't upgrade easily
2) No installation media means you need to install Snow Leopard before you can upgrade to Lion (the workaround I posted helps, but isn't "official")
3) On Macs that will come with Lion, there will be no separate install media, so if you lose your main hard drive you are SOL unless you create restore media yourself (again, "unofficially". Apple doesn't provide a point and click way to do it)

Whereas technical users like myself will come up with workarounds, this is going to infuriate non-technical users who just want to get their system reinstalled, and would previously just boot from the restore disc that came with their Mac.

It almost makes it feel like Lion isn't really a "full" OS release; more of a for-pay service pack for Snow Leopard. Lame, lame, lame. Apple would become at least 20% cooler if they just put a "Burn Lion install disc" button into the Lion install application.

Obviously Apple wants to make sure everyone gets familiar with their new store and enters their credit card information for convenient future purchases.
