The 40 number is apparently a wild guess on the stores' part, they seem to be as much in the dark about details as everybody else.

Initial inventories in stores don't really tell us much about what's in the pipeline either. They may also be favoring lots of small shipments over fewer big ones just because this product is going to be a theft magnet.

ok so i have a friend who works at the cingular. no traing on the iPhone as of yet. he's also saything no way it's 40 phones per store. even with the price point being that high, they should at least be charing 100 per store on the release date.

I just posted this in a submission for a possible story, but thought it was directly relevant to this topic so I wanted to pass it along in case it might be helpful in anyway.

I was just told something pretty interesting tonight by a friend who is a franchisee of AT&T. Apparently, AT&T owns several of the stores it uses to sell its phones but some of the smaller and medium sized stores you frequently see are franchised, which makes total sense and is not uncommon.

What is significant however is that based on his conversations with AT&T it appears that only stores owned directly by AT&T will be receiving the iPhone and not the authorized franchisee stores. If this is true it could further reduce the supply outlets available, but seemingly would increase the number of units available at the selected locations owned by AT&T.

I am not going to take any chances, I will be in front of the store before they open in the morning. Which store however, is going to depend on how they handle selling the device.

Regardless of how many ship, I am willing to bet within a few days of release it will be hard to find and/or sold out.

I'm really having a hard time believing that a $500 phone will sell out within a few days of release. Consoles and all that are different, especially since they always have much less available, but a phone? After the initial EXPENSIVE cost you still have to pay to use the thing.

You're forgetting that these will likely be the social status-equivalent of severe breast/penis enlargement.

$500 is not expensive for a new to the market phone. Its actually rather common. The last 3 phones I purchased were about $500 - $600 when first released.

Beyond that, people line up around the block for all sorts of strange things, besides consoles.

Like many other electronics out there, they won't ship with a ton at first. After the first round, it won't be too hard to find them when they come on. I am sure you will be able to order it online, and get it right after its made. Thats something you can't do with a console. When the PS3 was out, there wasn't anywhere you could purchase it online ... and just wait until its made and shipped.

Keep in mind, my guess is after the launch sells out ... it will take another 3 - 4 weeks before you will get yours.

Of course, all a guess. But, based on the amount of press this silly thing is getting, I think people are going to easily step up and drop the cash.

someone else was talking about this also on another thread. it called ego, and apple fans always want more ego. i'm thinking the the phone will sell out the 1st day in most stores. all because of ego.

Both the Treo 650 and 680 had shortages at Cingular stores when launched. The Treo 650 was out of stock for over a month at launch due to initial demand.

Good luck getting an iPhone. AT&T stores are a mess.

When I bought a razr for my girlfriend (quite a while ago, when they first came out). I had a little trouble finding it, I had to go to a few stores in order to find a store that had one in stock at one of their chain stores. I had some friends that tried to find it, and had very little luck for a few weeks.

There hasn't been many phones with such a demand, so this is gonna be interesting.

I wonder ... will any stores do a midnight sale of them ? Now that, would rock LOL.
