I had a final exam on Wednesday at 8am

I went to bed at around 3 am, hoping to wake up at 7am for my test.

Right before going to bed I checked my e-mail and must have forgotten to lock my phone off

Woke up at 8:40 only to realize my phone was completely dead

Thankfully I was allowed to take the final ( took it at 9, only given 2 hours instead of 3)

So lesson learned, I set my autolock to five minutes now

Since getting my first iPhone in February of 2008, I've not once had my auto lock turned on. I find it more frustrating than helpful.

I can't recall a single time that I forgot to lock it.

How is it frustrating? If you always lock your phone manually then you should never notice auto-lock.

Like, if it's set to 5 minutes but you always manually lock it then you'd never experience it since you'd have locked it yourself long before it ever did.

Because when you turn it on, it's set to 1 minute by default. If I'm doing something via SSH there's going to be a lot of times where I go without touching my phone for a while.

Yeah, it's soooooo frustrating to press home and slide your finger.

Was this directed at me?

+1

I have it set to five minutes now, and I've never notice it

It's like my LCD, I have it set to turn off after 1 hour of inactivity.

Not having an auto off feature = waste of electricity/battery life

I find that disabling auto-lock is very useful during conference calls when I work from home. I keep mute on a lot when I'm on these calls, but need to be able to very quickly un-mute when I'm needed.

Would Insomnia work w/ SSH? I've never tried, but it sounds like it'd work in theory...

I do the exact same thing the OP does. I use my iPhone as my alarm. However, i have my iPhone plugged into my computer because it's at around 30% by the end of the day anyways. You should start doing that OP

Wouldn't the lesson here be to charge your phone before you go to sleep?

I was fully charged when I went to bed !!!!

For those wondering why I didn't have it plugged in

@ I'm a pretty heavy sleeper, so unless my phone/alarm is next to my head I don't wake up
@ Room is too big to have phone plugged into computer = too quiet
@ No outlets near bed

Extension cords ftw. I have a loft bed, and a long as extension cord for my iphone. And a full battery every morning. :D

You know that never occured to me ( usb cord -> iphone charger -> extension cord)

I guess the whole Apple + ugly looking extension cord is what's ultimately stopping me

I'm just going to go into CVS this weekend and buy a $10 alarm clock :p

I'm not an iphone user yet so bear with me... If your phone isn't locked/set to autolock does the screen stay on or something? What about it causes faster battery drainage? I thought locking the phone was kind of like keyguard/keylock on a phone, but maybe I'm mistaken? TIA :)

PS - OP, I'm glad you were still able to write your exam!

Yes the screen stays on unless it is locked manually or via auto lock. It's not like BB where the screen will fade and then turn off but leave the keys in use. Hope that answers your question.

That answers it perfectly. Thank you! :)
