The sound quality gets a major downgrade when the mic on the airpods are turned on. I've read that this is because of the change in codecs and limitations of bluetooth.
I wonder if this is indeed a limitation of bluetooth and if a firmware update could change things.

I find this sad because my old earpods records my voice a lot better than my new Airpods 2.
Also the microphone on my iPhone XS is absolutely fantastic.

I believe it is a limitation of Bluetooth – to simultaneously record and play, the hardware needs to ratchet down to some standard reminiscent of the earliest Bluetooth headsets and things. (For phone calls, though, my callees have told me the relative sound quality of my voice through the AirPods is pretty high.)
